Monthly Archives: January 2005
Courtesy of atlantajetsfan (thanks!) on ESPN's Jets Message Board, I saw a link to salary cap information
concerning the Jet's cap space and found it rather interesting.
According to this site, the Jets have the second most room to work with
in the NFL.

George knows the Jets' Front Office have lots of these.
should allow them to resign the free agents they like, and go after
some players for offense and the secondary. Things are looking good. I
almost can't beleive that I am a Jets fan and I am optimistic. Yes,
those words were just in the same sentence.
Rush Rush…
Sorry, I am busting out some posts today. More than
likely, I won't be able to post at all this weekend, so I am trying to
hold over all y'alls “Jets-Jonez.” As for me, I am partying down with
the family in NYC this weekend for my aunt's 50th birthday party.
Sounds lame? Not my family, I hope to come back with some good stories
for ya next week!
Assistant Quarterbacks Coach, Jeremy Bates from the Bucs, in an ironic twist is joining the Jets
as QB Coach. When asked about the move, Bates stated “I am glad I am
with the Jets, I don't want to be Hackett-ized.”(Bada-bum!)
Interestingly, Bates is the son of former interim head coach of the
Dolphins who has quite a bullet point on his resume, embarassing the
Patriots, yet still lost his chance at being a head coach to Nick
Saban. Read about how sweet that game was. Then read Bent's breakdown on the Jets loss in December.
It is nice to think that while Paul Hackett is getting his QB Coach nameplate ready for his office in Tampa, so is Bates…
From looking at a couple different mock
draft boards, the 2005 draft will be interesting for the Jets. Some
boards have the Jets taking TE Heath Miller or Alex Smith, while others think that Carlos Rogers will help the secondary.
It stands to reason to look into the free agent market (1 & 2) to see how the Jets can fill the gaps before the draft.
Unless the Jets sign a Tight End between now and the draft, think
the Jets will try to gun for Miller or Smith, but if there is a
signing, then I think that the Jets will look for a young cover corner
and fill the gaps on the O & D lines by free-agency.
Ex-Jet: Chad will like new system – Randy Lange
Neil
O'Donnell, who has been a broadcaster for the Titans thinks that Chad
Pennington and Heimerdinger will get along well. O'Donnell predicts
some friction, but knows that his expectation of perfection is a good
thing.
“Mike wants to be out
there in March, April, the first time the sun comes out, tossing the
football around. He wants his quarterbacks out there. He's a big
off-season guy.“I'm sure Chad will be able to learn it all in the classroom, but
you won't be able to execute it unless you see it and do it. That will
hurt Chad, but hopefully he'll be ready to go on Day One of camp.”“One thing about Mike, he's very, very disciplined,” O'Donnell
said. “If you're supposed to get 11 yards, you'd better get 11 yards,
don't get 10. He instills that discipline and he wants it to carry
over to the game. Justin McCareins [another former Titan] is a great
route runner and I think a lot of that comes from Mike Heimerdinger.”
Jets' Sneak on Chad's Tear – NY Daily News, Rich Cimini
It looks like the papers are treating the whole shoulder thing like it is Watergate.
I mean, why would they let everyone know the gory details of the
injury? If they do, opposing pass rushers would try to aggravate the
injury, and media and fans would have been livid asking, “why is Chad
playing?”
You are damned if you do and you are damned if you don't.
Surgeon says Chad Will be Fine - NY Newsday
According to doctors, Chad's and his shoulder will be find for
camp, but his shoulder will never be what it once was. This from a guy
who never had a cannon to begin with…
Today, Dr. Elliot Pellman, the team doctor for the Jets will
address the media, in a rare press conference. Most seem to think that
Chad will make a recovery to allow him to be ready for camp this
summer. Knowing his work-ethic, expect him to do his best to ensure his
ability to play. Regarding the operation:
DiNubile said rotator cuff surgery is common in
the latter stages of quarterbacks' and pitchers' careers but rare for
someone Pennington's age. “It's not a great situation for a 28-year-old
quarterback,” DiNubile said. “Rotator cuff surgery for a quarterback
that young is unusual.”
Burress Among Key Free Agents for AFC runner-up
This
is the guy I want for the Jets. There isn't a snowball's chance in hell
that it will, but Burress would be the prototype free-agent acquisition
for this offense.
The Jets are looking for a big, physical wide receiver to
complement Moss & McCareins, and with Heimerdinger, I wonder
whether this would be a move they would like to make.
More than likely, this is too much of a splash for the Jets, but I can dream can't I???
CHAD NEEDS SURGERY FOR TORN ROTATOR CUFF - New York Daily News
Looks like Chad's injury was worse than the team let on. I thought
he would need surgery, but a torn labrum needs some serious rehab. If
you will remember, a torn labrum is the same injury that Pedro Martinez
has.
An MRI within the last couple of days, however,
showed much more damage than a mere strain. According to two sources
familiar with the situation, Pennington will soon have surgery to
repair a torn rotator cuff and a tear in his labrum. Now, instead of a
quick surgery to clean things up, it's unclear how long that'll keep
Pennington from throwing.
It is good that he is starting this process now, because he is going to need all the time he can get to be ready for the season.
For Brien out loud – New York Daily News
Gary Myers catches up with “the poster child for last-second missed field goals,” Scott Norwood, about Doug Brien.
When asked about the kicks, Norwood defended Brien, saying a lot of
kickers miss twice. While I was on Ryan Wilson's Heels, Sox &
Steelers site, I read a comment from a former kicker who said that
there is nothing worse than missing a kick short (which Brien did on
the first one).
Apparently, your inclination on the next kick is to hit it as hard
as you can, and thus sacrifice accuracy, which is what happened on his
second kick.
Stadium Stuff:
Filip Bondy writes about all the new arenas and stadiums
being planned in the New York area and what the status of these
projects are, and how they tie in with the bid for the Olympic games in
2012.
As the
season winds down (but not the news), I wanted to say thank you to all
the readers of this site, I appreciate your interest in the blog. I
take it as a sign that I am doing something right, so thank you.
I wanted to take the time to outline a few things that I would like to dedicate myself to this offseason, any feedback is appreciated. Please let me know what you think by commenting or emailing me directly:
1) First, to continue to share the most important and relevant news about the Jets and throw in some opinion to begin the discussion.
2) Become a more interactive site.
I would like to see more discussion on the comments section and spark
more discussion. I know this isn't a message board, and I don't want it
to be, but I truly do want to hear what you think, and want to create a
dialog for people to come back to.
3) Get a real domain name.
This blogspot.com stuff is OK, but I want a name (that isn't already
taken) for people to easily recognize. Unfortunately, someone grabbed
the one I wanted, the day before I did (grrr)…
4)Grow the readership.
Partly, this is self-serving, and I will admit that up front. But also,
the more readers, the easier it will be for me to create a launching
point for discussion and information. So, if you are a fan and have
friends who are fans, tell them about the site, and see what they
think. With more eyeballs, I will hopefully get more visibility within
the sports community. A good example is a friend who started www.celticsblog.com
and has now gotten to the point where he just had a Q&A with the
play-by-play commentator for the Celtics. This is the type of
information I would like to uncover for you, my fellow football and
Jets fans.
Again, thank you for your readership, but I need your help. Ideas, thoughts comments are always welcome,
as is sharing the site with others on the 'net or off. I am going to
“pin” this at the top for a while, to make sure people see this and
continue the feedback.
Thanks,
Brian
Volek: Heimerdinger will pay off for Jets – NJ.com
McCareins: New OC's a Creator – New York Post
So the reports are true, the Dinger likes to yell, but his
players respected him and say that they think he made them better
players.
Justin McCareins (Jets WR & Former Titan):
“Creativity
is the first word I'd use,” McCareins said. “You're not dealing with
someone who's afraid to take some risks. Game to game, he always had
new things, match-ups we could take advantage of. If he saw weaknesses,
he had no problem throwing the ball down the field.”
Billy Volek (Titans Backup QB):
“We
were missing six or seven guys and playing with what some people might
call scrubs and we still put up some amazing numbers. He does his
homework and does a good job of relating it to the players.”
Wow,
this is great to hear. Although I had some general sense about what the
Jets were getting, it is great to hear the comments of players.
Apparently Heimerdinger signed a three year deal, worth $3 Million.
Herm has always been one to let his folks interview for better
jobs, but will his new baby be the exception to the rule? If they are
going to pay him that much, I would expect so. Do you think that the
Jets be able to keep him if he becomes a commodity next year? What do
you think?
Quarterbacks coach spot might open soon - ESPN.com
Word
on the street is that Jon Gruden might be looking out for his old boss.
While Hackett was the head coach at the University of Pittsburgh,
Gruden was a position coach for him.
One possible job
would be quarterbacks coach; current QB coach John Shoop is seeking an
offensive coordinator's post with other teams. A Buccaneers source says
Gruden is intrigued by Hackett's 91-54 record as an offensive
coordinator.
It will be interesting, rather than seeing
Herm's stoic glance, Gruden's trademark scowl, directed at Hackett.
Good luck Bucs fans, I guess there is only so much damage a QB coach
can do…
