According
to Newsday and “sources” within the Jets and Redskins organizations, it
looks like the Jets think they are the running for both Fred Smoot and for Derrick Mason.
[The
Jets are] preparing to focus attention on free-agent Derrick Mason, a
person with knowledge of the situation said yesterday.
And
Redskins
cornerback Fred Smoot also is believed to have emerged as an option for
the Jets, who quietly are looking for a dramatic upgrade to their
secondary when the free-agent period begins tomorrow.
I
am glad the Jets have realized that Mason is a good option for them,
but Jacksonville has made some strides recently with Mason, and they
have deeper pockets than the Jets. This should be interesting to watch
develop, but I can't imagine the Jets are in the drivers' seat right
now with Mason.
