News: Lucas – "It's good when you can get a team to quit on you."

by Bassett on November 15th, 2005 at 1:53 pm

Ken LucasAnother player, Jason Fabini has been put on the injured reserve
yesterday.. so what else is new? This latest news now makes the
offensive lineup 6 players different than it did Week 1, with four of
five starters on the line having changed or swapped positions.

See a graphic showing all the new starters (in yellow on the second row).

Apparently, Carolina cornerback Ken Lucas said that the Jets gave up on the game, stating:

“It's good when you can make a team quit on you…

You
thought at the end of the game that they would at least try to throw
the ball for the end zone, but they just ran the ball and ran the clock
out.”

This apparently has Panthers coach John Fox backpedalling for Lucas, and even calling Herm about the comments. Fox and Edwards were both Aztecs on the same team and have a respect for each other. When asked about Lucas' comments, Edwards replied to reporters:

“I wasn't going to put that quarterback in harm's way any longer.

I'll
let the quarterback leave the game with some dignity, I know how he
felt. I know how the team felt. I used to be a player. I'm not going to
put the quarterback in harm's way, go back out there, line up in the
shotgun, try to throw passes and get him killed.”

Which then begs the question then… at what point do you stop playing to win the game?

Lucas is right on – Herm is a quitter. See the Baltimore game plan for exhibit A. Not even Kotite would give up like that. Please go to KC Herm, please.

I am so tired of Jet excuses.
3/5 of the OL are players who started the season (albeit at other positions). Scott Gragg was hired because we knew Fabini had a bad knee so complaining now about him playing, a one time pro bowler, especially since he has had time to get in shape and learn the system, seems amazingly sour grapey to me. Goodwin was our #1 replacement for Guard or Center. Complaining about his playing is also ridiculous. Why have these guys on the team if they cannot play?

You gotta know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em…
I think it's pretty obvious why we didn't throw downfield against Baltimore or at the end of the Panthers game, or even when we were trailing in Atlanta – the kid struggles to get the ball downfield, so it would kill his confidence if he kept trying and failing to get the ball down the field.
However, I still would have liked to have seen a bit more imagination used in terms of spreading the field by playing to BB's strength (ie his mobility).
