I picked up a Post at lunch and saw that Cannizzaro has already reported that Bob Sutton, the Jets' linebackers' coach will succeed Donnie Henderson (who is en route to Green Bay to talk) as the new defensive coordinator. Sutton who was head coach at West Point from 1991-1999 is quiet, so to learn more, check his bio on the Jets' site. Newsday is reporting rumors on this, but no concrete decision.
As far as I can tell, nothing definitive on Westhoff or Heimerdinger, but decisions shouldn't be long now.
More on the Magical Mangini:
Here are two more articles with some serious and some humorous background information on Mangini, which round out a picture of a hard-working, tough-nosed guy. Experienced or not, I think we will like what he can bring to the Jets.

Not really. Loved Donnie and what he gave this team in '04, and wish him luck. But he was an Edwards guy, not a Parcells/Belichick guy (certainly not a Bradway/Tennenbaum guy) and Sutton is.
Edwards was a motivator, not a schemer. Mangini is a schemer. Donnie was both, but his “scheme” and Mangini's were likely not compatible. Therefore, EM wants more direct control, something Donnie likely didn't want to relinquish. I think Eric saw that Sutton was effective in teaching schemes and motivating players and figured he was a good, logical person to succeed DH.
Kudos to Eric for wanting a DC though, as I think all coaches should have dedicated OC and DC, especially young ones.
I'm not too worried about the defense. There are some unanswered questions (Abe, NT position, CB) but if they had to put the product they've got on the field tomorrow, at least we would consider it NFL caliber and not WNFL caliber like the offense. -

Per the Jets' site Henderson, Pep Hamilton (WR) and John Zernhelt (TE) are out. I don't know if that means Heimerdinger and Westoff stay, but it seems that way. -
Given that Mr Mangini is supposed to be a “defensive genius” I’m not too pissed that they’re letting Donnie go. Mangini probably has his own sets and ideas on that side of the ball and didn’t want there to be clashes. I’m going to try and stay positive about this team (at least until after the draft!), though that whole “fourth round pick†thing pissed me off big time.

ps. Is Mangini pronounced “Man-Gee-Nee I live on the other side of the world and haven’t heard anyone say it yet. -
Sutton is from the “tree”. He was hired by Parcells to coach the linebackers for Al Groh. Was able to stick around through the Edwards years.
I tend to think there are similarities in the defensive scheme/mindset of Sutton and Mangini due to their backgrounds. This — coupled with Sutton's knowledge of the players — must have helped his case.
Hadyn, you have the pronounciation correct. -
I'd like to see what they can do with Bryan Thomas. The guy is talented. I think they should move him to OLB and utilize his speed. He seemed to prefer talking the RB while Abe liked to tackle the QB.

is anyone else miffed that we would let Donnie leave while promoting one his underlings? Only thing I can think of is that Mangini was impressed enough from his brief meeting with Sutton to give him job; has some history with him; players love him.
