News: Brian Schottenheimer Becomes Next O.C.
Posted on January 30th, 2006 by Bassett
The Jets have announced the signing of Brian Schottenheimer, the 32 year old son of the illustrious Marty Schottenheimer.
Young Schott has been the Chargers' QB Coach most recently and has helped to develop Drew Brees into his current splendor. The ESPN report states that he has a knack for understanding the passing game (as a former QB, one should hope).
It's an interesting hire, but again, another unproven talent at this level. At least this should all make for some interesting story lines…

At a glance, this seems like the right hire. That SD offense, albeit talented, was awesome at times over the last two years.
Here's hoping that he can do with our motley crew of QBs what he did for Brees. Remember, Brees was a goner right up until 2 years ago. Since then, he's become one of the best in the game.
Sadly, however, I suspect this marks the end of any major transactions until at least March 3rd. Sigh. Guess I'll get back to work.
Let's hope in 10 years they'll be talking about this staff the way they talk about Belichick's Cleveland Browns staff.
The young Schott was clearly the guy the Jets wanted–they put out unattributed stories to the media that the job had come down to Palmer vs. Schurmer (I believed that, too, so I thought that Schottenheimer was a just a one day trial balloon)–they were obviously shielding their guy from the interest of other teams.
It's reassuring that the team did something shrewd, for once–let's hope that's a harbinger of many more such maneuvers.
Btw, anyone see Sinorice Moss in the Senior Bowl? I saw he caught a td pass–Is he a reasonable facsimile of his brother, albeit a couple of inches shorter? I'd happily line him up in the slot…..
Sinorice is electrifying off of the line. One scouting service said that they could not remember a WR with a better first step. Worth watching, since we're all still feeling a little bit burnt by the LC/SM trade. He's probably a second tier receiver in the class, probably 5th best prospect behind the taller guys. He weighed in at the Senior Bowl at 5'7″ and a half. When you're 5'7″ you don't want to get cheated out of that half.
Could be a nice playmaker for someone, but I'd say unless he fell to early third round, we're unlikely to see him in Green and White.
Schottenheimer is the guy I wanted out of the available options, so I'm happy. Drew Brees looked like a complete different player after a few years under Schottenheimer, and the scheme was designed to allow a 6'0″ quarterback to have good throwing lanes.
Now I can only hope he tells Terry to stay far, far away from Philip Rivers (not that I think San Diego is interested in trading him anymore).
Young Schottenheimer today, Phillip Rivers tomorrow. Believe it, the JETS are trading their #1 pick to SD for Rivers and SD's #1 pick. Don't believe this Cutler stuff.

The beat writers crying about the Jets no comments is getting very old. I still don't understand what the big deal was about holding Heimerdinger to his contract until a fair settlement was negotiated. He and Marone both got the jobs they wanted anyway, so big whoop! BOO-HOO the Jets aren't leaking me information. WAAAA!!!
if our new OC's last name is any indication of which way our offense is going to go, i'm a bit nervous. this guy may not be his father but it's not often the apple falls far from the tree. it frightens me to think we may not be away from the days when curtis is up the middle on a draw play… and it's 3rd and 8.
marty ball made the same mistake against us that herm made against pitt last year.
i know our new guy wasn't responsible for that but this concerns me.
So we swapped Heimers — 'Dinger for Schott — it's okay by me. Who wouldn't want a young, hard-working son of a coach that has been around the NFL his entire life? He took Brees off the scrap heap and resurrected his career, let's hope he can do the same for Chad until whoever the next young QB they get in here is ready to play.
I'm amazed that so many of the beat writers are trying to stir up so much trouble, especially about the whole creation of the Jets staff. I laugh when I see in the Daily News today one story how the Steelers were smart enough to bring in Farrior, and the next story criticizing the Jets for putting together a young staff, say like the Steelers did when they brought in Cowher. How has that worked out? Idiots writers.
Clearly, Cimini of the News absolutely hates the Jets–and his life for having to cover them. It's really too funny — I can't believe he still has a job there.

Another thought: San Diego had a lot of success the couple of years throwing to the tight end, and back out of back field–obviously they had major talent at both positions. But this looks like a very good year for TE's–wonder if Schott's hiring by the Jets could influence them to go after a TE in the first or second round?
You know, it just occured to me why it is that Chad might suddenly be
taking a hard line about renegotiating his contract. He knows that
under the worst circumstances, he gets cut and winds up as the
starting quarterback for Kansas City in 2007. He'd still get his
guaranteed money, the Chiefs would sign him to a deal that would allow
him to spend this year rehabbing and backing up Trent Green, and then
he'd be ready to go the season after that, when Green will be 37.
That said, let's take Chad out of the equation for the moment.
Hopefully he renegotiates and he rehabs and comes back and is able to
be the starting quarterback for us this year. But we're obviously
still going to need to address the position. These would probably be
my preferences, in order:
1) Trade for Matt Schaub. I'm thinking a three and a five, I'd do a
two, and I would consider swapping ones if there was a first day pick
coming the other way.
2) Take Matt Leinart at four. He probably won't be there, but there
is an off-chance that he drops if someone likes Ferguson enough to
take him top three and if either Young or Cutler happen to be hirer on
either New Orleans' or Tennessee's draft board.
3) Take Charlie Whitehurst, Omar Jacobs or Brodie Croyle in the late
second/early third range and bring in a veteran for this season,
either Jon Kitna or Patrick Ramsey, most likely.
4) Ride it out with Pennington, Fiedler and Bollinger this year and
wait to see what San Diego is going to do with Drew Brees. He now has
serious injury questions of his own, but it's possible that he rehabs
quickly. It's also possible that San Diego takes the opportunity to
make Philip Rivers the de facto starter, leaving Brees available to be
dealt.
247) Trade for Philip Rivers.
Excuse me- 4) was trading down to the 8-10 range and taking Jay Cutler.
I actually lived out in Phoenix for a while and had a chance to see McCown live several times. I've also kept my eye on him with the Sunday Ticket, and I have to say I am against bringing him in instead of pursuing options 1, 2 or 3 (unless you are thinking of him as a substitute for Ramsey or Kitna). He's not an accurate passer and he doesn't make very good decisions with the ball.
Schaub is really my strong preference, and I don't mind giving up draft picks to get him. The guy has Matt Hasselbeck written all over him. He's currently playing on a rookie deal, and even if you had to renegotiate upon trading for him, you wouldn't be giving him anywhere near the bonus that will go to a quarterback selected with the #4 pick. The kid can play (and it won't hurt him that he played for Al Groh, who is part of the Parcells tree). If Atlanta was willing to trade him to Cincy for their second rounder, then you would think that the Jets could make a comparable deal with their third rounder and a later pick, but I would have no problems with biting the bullet and giving up the second rounder if it meant securing a guy who can be an upper echelon starting quarterback. I would also give serious thought to swapping first rounders with Atlanta, particularly if a second or third rounder came back. Say we slid down to 15 and let Atlanta move up to 4. At 15 we took DeAngelo Williams or Vernon Jordan. You are suddenly adding two major offensive weapons while actually improving your salary cap situation.
