Oliver Celestin Waived

Oliver Celestin, who has been with the Jets now for two years after being signed off the Vikings practice squad was waived, likely solidifying Kerry Rhodes role as the starter, and possibly bolstering Andre Maddox, who was drafted last year, but was injured during training camp.

Also note the timing of the press release tonight — Chad wants to be a Jet…. I'm guessing its his 1st of several terms of signing a new deal to be announced tomorrow. I'm guessing $4M in guaranteed and salary next year as I thought a few weeks back.
But, the release is Chad showing he wants to be perceived by fans as the good soldier.
I thought Celestin was impressive in the preseason, but he didn't do much of anything during the regular season. I'm assuming this is a vote of confidence for Andre Maddox and Rashad Washington.
$4 million guaranteed is still a bit high for Chad if he can't throw, but is very doable if he turns out to be able to actually compete for a starting job this year. Throw in the $1.7 million Patrick Ramsey would cost if the proposed deal with Washington goes through (John Clayton was reporting a deal was not far off with Ramsey coming to New York for a sixth rounder), and you're looking at $5.7 million at the quarterback spot. There's still room to go up for Leinart or grab Cutler if the team wants to, and there is significant cap savings to devote elsewhere if the team decides they're set at quarterback, or if they don't address the position through the draft until the 2nd or 3rd round (in which case, I think it's likely that one of the compensatory picks for Abraham goes to selecting Brodie Croyle).
