On Pennington: The Jury is still out

by Bassett on March 1st, 2006 at 1:09 pm

From reading Hutch's article this morning, it's clear that Pennington wants to remain a Jet and it sounds like he is willing to take a pay cut, just not the one the Jets had initially offered. His agent, countered with an offer in the neighborhood of $4-5 million this year, so I imagine if they can work down to somewhere north of $3 million, he might be able to stay with the team.

First off, I'm always quick to criticize, so I have to compliment the story by Cimini on Pennington in the News this morning.
Now the question is: how does re-signing Chad truly affect the draft? If healthy, you have a decent starting qb, so do they still go out and get Cutler or Leinart, or do they stay put, get D'Brick and go for a qb in the second round (like a Croyle), or do they even trade down, get more picks and try to fill a bunch of holes?
I know there's a clamoring to trade up and get a “franchise” qb, but with so many things to address, is that really the right move?

I've said all along, give Pennington his 3 million dollar roster bonus and the one million salary with incentives. This cuts five million off this years cap and adds no future cap liability.
