NFL Europe – Week Two Recap
Hey look kids, there's Big
Ben, and there's Parliament!
We're back to Europe for another
installation of the web's only NFL Europe weekly recap seen through Jets-colored
glasses, and written by a Brit. Bent brings Week 2 home to us colonials on the
other side of the pond.
The action
over here in Europe is hotting up. Not quite enough yet for Sky Sports to start
showing the games on TV, but never mind.
The Rhein Fire defeated the Berlin Thunder 22-0 to
kick off the weekend's action. Drew
Henson (Dallas) passed for 171
yards and a touchdown. Old friend Little
John Flowers was held to just 13 yards rushing on five carries (and two catches
for six yards) as Berlin struggled to
get anything going offensively.
The game
between Frankfurt and Hamburg was more
interesting with the Galaxy (that's Frankfurt, by the way) coming out
on top with a 31-14 victory. Jets
Charles Missant and Isaac Snell started on the offensive line for
Frankfurt, who rushed for 195 yards on 34 carries and did not concede a
sack.
Jovan
Witherspoon saw action at wide receiver for the Sea Devils (that's
Hamburg, by the way)
and caught two passes for a Terrence Stubbs-esque nine yards. CB James Taylor saw action for
Frankfurt, but did not register on the statsheet. Frankfurt's victory was sparked
by Roger Robinson (Arizona), who rushed
for 150 yards and a touchdown.
Finally, the Amsterdam Admirals hung on to defeat the Cologne
Centurions (I think “Cleansers” would have been a better name) by 20 points to
15. Kliff Claven, I
mean Kingsbury, got the start at QB for Cologne but was unable
to lead Cologne to victory,
mainly because Tim Duncan (Oakland) missed four
field goals (one of which was blocked and returned for the opening
touchdown). Good to see it's not just
free throws he struggles with.
Kingsbury was
unable to lead a scoring drive (although he did get them into field goal range
twice) but as soon as he was replaced, Cologne scored on
their next three possessions. Still,
Kevin Eakin had a slow start last year and look where he ended up…the CFL! Ummm, good luck, uncle Kliffy! Kingsbury's final statistics were
6-12-70 passing and 1-5
rushing. He rejoined the action with 7
minutes to go and Cologne down by five,
but the drive ended (predictably) in a missed field goal and
Amsterdam were able to
run out the clock.
Michael King
and Marko Cavka started on the offensive line for
Amsterdam, again with
impressive results. The Admirals rushed
for 106 yards and only conceded two sacks.
Skyler Fulton (Seattle) caught five
passes for 105 yards and a TD for the Admirals.
Old friend Atari Bigby (GB) got his name on the
scoresheet, but only because he conceded a safety by booting a blocked punt
through his own end zone. Rumour (sic)
has it that the Mets are considering signing him to play second base.
This week,
you can read a Q&A with former Jets backup-clipboard holder/special team
utility waterboy Tory Woodbury.
So, there you
have it. Mercifully short, but hopefully
from next week I will be able to get to see some of our guys in action. Good to see our project linemen showing some
promise. How about a
Jones-Snell-Missant-King-Cavka offensive front next year? After last year's injury woes, I'd better be
careful what I wish for…
