Jets Fill Hole at Starting Cornerback

by Bassett on March 30th, 2006 at 11:56 am

The wires are reporting that the Jets have signed Cornerback Andre Dyson (formerly with the Titans and Seahawks) to a five year deal worth more about $11.5 million, with $3 million in signing/roster bonuses.

Dyson was signed clearly to replace Ty Law as the second starter at corner, and will be a decent stopgap with some upside. This isn't the first time that Dyson has had dealings with the Jets. If you will remember, he talked to the Jets right before the 2005 draft, but the rumor is that he chose Seattle because his wife was averse to New York. It looks like they are now here all the same…

Scouts, Inc. rates Dyson as a 73 out of 100 which makes him a “good starter.” Other players with grades within a point of Dyson: Jerry Azumah (CHI), Deltha O'Neal (CIN), Al Harris (GB), Asante Samuel (NE), Quentin Jammer (SD), and Ken Lucas (CAR). Here are some snippets on his abilities.

“… excellent burst out of the break and as a result will break up a lot of plays and get his fair share of picks. Each and every year he has matured in terms of instincts and recognition skills and displays good range in a variety of zone and man schemes. Has the speed, acceleration and technique to recover if caught out of position. However … he still seems to lack focus and is inconsistent [with] press coverage, lacks ideal bulk, strength and size and can struggle in the red zone vs. bigger, more physical receivers.”

What I especially like is that they've tried to solidify all the holes — qb, d-line, cb — with free agents or trades (Ramsey, KVO, now Dyson) before the draft, which will give them more …. wait for it . .. . FLEXIBILITY (thank you Mr. T) come draft day. Now they need to find an O-lineman somewhere.
By the way — maybe I missed the post, but where's the TJB draft party again?

I really like this signing and it gives the JETS the “FLEXIBILITY” (don't you just love this word!) to draft other needs, like a RB during the first day of the draft.

What about the O-LINE? Jonathan Goodwin signed with the Saints. So that leaves Brandon Moore, Adrian Jones, and Pete Kendall as the returning linemen. With no real backups to speak of.

The Jets need to 1. pick up the O-Line in free agency 2. unload a back or two and 3. trade two or three picks to the Texans for the number 1 overall pick (i.e. Reggie Bush).
Think of the splash that would be for a new head coach, how it would help the future of the Jets having a star like Bush at back, and the buzz it would create initially. At first I thought the jets picks were too valuable to make a move like this but the way they are bringing in inexpensive quality free agents, I say go for it. The Texans would probably be willing to make this deal considering they already have a quality running back and seem committed to Carr. The 4th pick would allow them to pick up D’Brickshaw which would be an upgrade for them.
Of course if the Jets can’t get at least a decent O-Line together I say pick up D’ Brickshaw at 4 and just pick up the most talented player with the late 1st round pick. Hopefully it would be a back because the committee we have now is not going to do anything spectacular.

Mangini will do things the Patriots way–look to fill the OL with free agents, roster cuts, and down draft selections. Probably much the same with running back–there's always a mid rounder who will average 4.4.-4.5 yards per carry, pretty much the league average. You don't build great teams around even the greatest running backs, and they have the shortest careers of any position in the game. If runners made offenses, then great runners who lacked great qb's, like Sanders and OJ, would have a ton of Super Bowl trophies. But it's the other way around–the great ones don't win championships unless they complement great passing attacks. And great passing attack can win with interchangeable runners–it never works the other way around.
Given that we were all disappointed when the Jets lost Dyson last year, we should view this as a shrewd value selection now–he's not great, but he's good. Still, they still need help at corner–Magnini knows you can move other of front seven guys around, but a bad defensive backfield destroys even the best planned defense (as it did the Pats for part of last year).

Why a good signing? He's no Ty Law and the CB is downgraded from last year. Current CB's INT's last year, Barrett (5), Dyson (1), Miller (0), Strait (0). Four CB's totalling 6 INTS's last season….. Law had 10.
The job of the front office is to upgrade positions. They haven't done it and they are still 20 million under the cap.

At least some other teams wanted to sign the guy this time. You can't complain about that any more!
