Audible: Help me through writer's block

by Bassett on May 17th, 2006 at 2:37 pm

With some light weeks for news between now and the upcoming camps, I will have a chance to write some more creative posts between now and then. Now I know that you all probably have more educated opinions on most topics than I do, but I wanted to see what you thought might be some good 'starting points' for some discussions over the next few weeks. All ideas related to the Jets / NFL are welcome.

its interesting to me how far mangini will go to have his type of guys on the roster, sacrificing pure athletic ability for smarts and a hard-nosed attitude. so, i am wondering which existing jets he might cut in training camp. i had guessed (in a thread a few days ago) that the most high profile guy to be cut would be Hobson. too slow, and not particularly good in any phase (a really bad draft pick in my opinion). Jolley, McCairens, Martin (if he's not recovered – certainly not for lack of smarts or effort) and Barrett are candidates too, but really who isnt a candidate to be cut when you've been 4-12 and played in a bit of a country club atmosphere for the last few years?
i loved Coleman as a rookie, but his play has diminished since then. he's fast and covers alot of ground, but he – like so many of the Jets – doesnt tackle well. I think its a symptom of poor coaching that the Jet players either hit hard or wrap up a ball carrier, but almost never do both, with horrible results.
i'd hate to see Coleman go because he is so talented, but he seems to be exactly the kind of guy that Mangini passed over time and time again in the draft. it would be the mark of a good coach to take players like Coleman, Robertson, Miller, Rhodes and Barton and hone them into playmaking machines. unlike the offense, which still lacks personnel, the defense can be a very effective unit from the outset if the coaching is there and the guys are willing to adapt.
its fun again to be a jet fan. where there is life there is hope :)

I really enjoyed the mock draft via polling TJB readers, so why not come up with TJB All Time Jets team using the same method.
    11 players on offense
    11 players on defense
    punter, place kicker
head coach, general manager, offensive/defensive coordinator
that's 28+ posts and should easily carry you through the summer.

Sure – Keystone or Keystone Light?
Memorable plays. The Jets have the best highlights during draft day….
    80's – The Jets select Ken O'Brien
90's – The Jets select Kyle Brady
00's – so far, no draft snafu's, the comeback against the Dolphins in 2000 was a classic even by ESPN's standards!

If you guys want historical stuff, I'm probably your man. I could definitely do some lists (top ten plays, top ten worst moments, etc) and these give plenty of cause for debate. (I did something similar for celticsblog last year, to a mixed response).
Bassett, based on the above, I think you could do a post about the guys on our roster who might be in danger of the axe and assign odds against the likelihood of that happening in each case.
I'm also up for doing our annual subway series coverage, which is normally fun.

How about a posting for each of the Jets road games this year? I know a bunch of guys who are planning a roadtrip to see the Jets in Jacksonville. Would be interesting to see airfare, hotels, ticket availability, etc.
Other potential road trips include Tennesse, Green Bay, beautiful Cleveland and Maimi on Christmas day.
