Film Room Friday: Law gets "Ankles Broken"

by Bassett on June 30th, 2006 at 10:00 am

Had I not already lost the will to live by this point last season, this play would have stung a lot more.  That being said, it's a nice little move by LaDanian on Ty Law.

Open Competition: The Safeties

by Bassett on June 29th, 2006 at 4:39 am

Still have a long way to work through on the All Time Jets, but I wanted to throw out another position by position discussion series. With a month until training camp, and an open competition for most every job, who do you think will be the starters for this team come Opening Weekend? Or will we see some sort of situational and game by game rotations? All the same, who are the “go-to” guys for the Jets?

Losses: Oliver Celestin (Seahawks)
Acquisitions: None
Rookies: Eric Smith (MSU), Jamie Thompson (OSU)
Strong Safeties: Kerry Rhodes, Andre Maddox
Free Safeties: Erik Coleman, Rashad Washington, Eric Smith, Jamie Thompson

This series will start with the defense and work it's way across the ball. With another head coach who is very familiar with the defensive backfield, what do you make of how this unit will shake out? Can Andre Maddox contribute now that he is healthy again? Will Rashad Washington make the best of this clean slate? Do Kerry Rhodes and Erik Coleman have what Mangini is looking for to keep their starting jobs? Can the new blood, Eric Smith, impress during camp this summer? Can Jamie Thompson keep his cup of coffee warm with the team?

I think that this unit will see a lot of situational rotations this season, but I believe that Rhodes and Coleman will hold onto their jobs, at least for now. Last year Coleman kept company (in terms of # of plays in which he was involved) with players like Adrian Wilson (Cards) and Michael Lewis (Eagles).

So what about Rhodes? Now remember, he played against some pretty good tight ends last year, and didn't really embarrass himself. Sight unseen last season after the draft, I thought he could be special. After looking at some stats from last season I stole from Football Outsiders on effectiveness of defensive players, I was shocked to see that he had similar numbers, NOT THE SAME THOUGH to one Troy Polamalu. I guess my point is, if this is what Rhodes could do on a bad team, as a rookie, is he capable of more on a good team, with another season under his belt? Remember he did transition to defense from QB during his college career, so if Rhodes can avoid mental mistakes, play the run better, and be more opportunistic against the pass, I see no reason for him turning into a solid defender for a while.

That being said, watch Eric Smith closely during camp and the preseason. If anyone can challenge for the starting job, it's him. He was clearly a guy handpicked by the braintrust.

How come everyone writes the same thing?

by Bassett on June 28th, 2006 at 10:53 am
I didn't see this until yesterday, but I noticed that burf had a question/mini-rant for Ken Berger that he answered with a whole post on his blog.

It started with burf's post (here's part) on Berger's Schottenheimer post.
As an aside, Ken… meaning no disrespect, but why is it that we get a flood of similar articles (from the beat reporters) about the Jets, only when info is *fed* to you guys?
And Berger addressed it in a long post, addressing the specific instance, along with what happens during the season when they are churning out stories left and right. I agree it can be a nuisance to see that, but I imagine that if the reporters did have different stories they would cover them as best they can. They are doing the best with what they have to work with.

Though I must say that I have this mental image of reporters just swarming from one player to the next looking for soundbites, but as I have never been there, I don't know if that is legitimate or not.

Kudos to burf for asking a question all of us fans have wondered.

The Circle of Life…

by Bassett on June 27th, 2006 at 1:40 pm

Charles Robinsion of Yahoo! Sports writes an excellent recap/look forward article focusing on Chad Pennington and how his career has already come full circle.

(Tip of the hat to R in CT for finding the article)

Feature on Nick Hartigan

by Bassett on June 26th, 2006 at 1:42 pm

Nick Hartigan got a recent feature article on him in the Providence Journal. He seems just the type of player that Mangini is looking for, but it remains to be seen whether he can really peform his new role as a Fullback rather than a Tailback.

This is now the second player (Micheal Warren, anyone) that the Jets have tried to convert to backup Askew. More than anything, I think Hartigan might make the team as a practice squad player, and go from there. Maybe I am just ignorant, but is there anything less efficient that using a roster spot for a backup fullback, when you could just use a tight end to play H-Back for a few plays if a fulback needs a break?

Penny's Playlist: 6/23/06

by Bassett on June 23rd, 2006 at 7:14 pm

If you notice to the left, the next stupid running TheJetsBlog gag that you will see is the mercurial “Penny's Playlist.” I think we are all well aware of Mike Greenberg's “song” that he has for Penny, well consider this a song on for Pennington as he battles his way back from his injury. Every week, at least from now through camp, we will look for a song that might capture the present mood with Pennington.

With no one player making a clear case for why the starting job during last week's minicamp, we think that the song most appropriate for this week is Radiohead's “In Limbo” from Kid A for obvious reasons. As for the album, if you don't own it, then shame on you.

I don't think it bears being said, but we love Pennington dearly and hope that he can again regain his form. We want the song on Penny's Playlist to be Queen's “We Are the Champions.”

Film Room Friday: Vilma on ESPN

by Bassett on June 23rd, 2006 at 12:05 pm

Looks like this aired right before the draft, but Jonathan Vilma sat down with ESPN News for an interesting Q&A on some of the offseason changes.
