The Don Majkowski Story

In his Day 1 training camp diary, our man R_in_CT referenced comments made by Rich Cimini concerning Don Majkowski, the former Packers QB.  Beat reporters have invoked Majkowski’s name of late because he suffered a rotator cuff injury at the height of his career…and never recovered.

Cimini told some of Majkowski’s story in a recent article, but a more in-depth story on Majkowski and his attempted comeback was written last year by Keith Goldberg, a columnist for the Hudson Valley’s Times Herald-Record.  I recalled this article this morning when I read of Pennington’s ‘rustiness’ at yesterday’s practice. Although medical science has advanced quite a bit since his injury, Majkowski’s story really puts Pennington’s rehabilitation task into perspective.

I know, I know. This story is a bit tired. However, the more I understand the severity of the Pennington’s injury, the more I admire the guy for his competitiveness.  He may be prone to injury, but no one should question his toughness.

  1. Is Clemens going to be Favre in our version of this story?

  2. I went to training camp yesterday and I have to say that nobody (quarterback) stood out. Chad's looked composed but there was little velocity on the ball. Ramsey missed open receivers, Clemens was OK. Bollinger looked good but not starting quarterback good. The most impressive player on the field was Ben Graham. Leon Washington looked slippery and should make the team. I was surprised with the 2 1/2 hour practice. My prediction is 8-8 this year.

  3. What I don't think reporters are taking into account are the 25 years of advancement in orthopaedic surgery.
In fact, the in just the last ten years major advances in the size and severity of the incision needed to complete the surgery have resulted in significantly lower incidence of deltoid degeneration.
Yes, he's got a rough road. But comparing someone who had two surgeries in the late 80's/early 90's isn't exactly apples to apples. Everyone whose read my past posts knows I'm really pulling for Penny. I think he can pull it off.
