Game Thread: Colts at Jets 10/01/2006

Today I will be live-blogging the game on the AOL Fanhouse. So look for my updates there, as well as in the Chat Room as I watch the game. As an added ‘bonus’ quality quips might just get you immortalzed on AOL.

Here are some things to watch for today as the Jets get ready to host the Colts:

  • Clearly, the Colts’ defense isn’t excactly crippling teams so far this season. The offense is going to get their points, so limiting the Colts’ offense to under 25 is key to staying in the game.
  • I heard Mangini quote a stat this week that Dungy is +38 in turnovers in his time in Indy so far. There can be NO tolerance for that.
  • Sounds like Blaylock was getting some playing time with the ones this past week. Just pray that the Jets are willing to mix up the running game. Not sure how much we will see James Hodgins, the new FB, but if they were running Jamar Martin out there, then we might see some of the bruiser today.
  • Some pundits this week were musing as to whether the Jets would show a 4-3 today. This could be interesting and give us a real sense of how much of a risk taker Mangini is. To me, the 4-3 would be a ’safer’ call against Manning.
  • The Jets offense really needs to stay on the field, keeping the ball in-bounds and moving the chains is key for the Jets.
  • The Colts secondary and pass rush is dinged up some. I could see Pennington having a +250 yard day (they’ll need it).

Off to some open houses… any house shopping advice? See you in a bit!

  1. Yeah, they need a pass rush, so maybe Ellis can generate something out of 4-3–that’s why the defense is getting killed in pass d, as well as vs. the run. You’ll recall that, despite everything, the defense was excellent vs. the pass last year. Why? A decent secondary, and All-Pro caliber Abe playing a whole season–now, of course, gone (and the jury’s still out on that–if Mangold becomes an All-Pro, too, it’s a wash–if not….) If there’s no pass rush, there’s every reason to think that the Colts will score 35+ points. Buffalo gained 475 yards last week!!!

And it’s not Pennington’s yards–it’s his yards per pass. I can see him throwing for over 300 yards and Jets losing by 20 or more because they’re behind the whole game and he has to put up 50 passes and generates a meager 6 yards or less per pass.

He needs better production than he got last week at Buffalo–more like the first two weeks, i.e. over 8 yards per throw. And he just needs to score–it doesn’t matter whether he “keeps the defense off the field” or not because Manning can come back down the field and score in 4 or 5 plays–again, the most overrated stat in football is “time of possession.” It would only matter if the other team didn’t get the ball back–but they do, following the kickoff, and if they’re an explosive offensive team like the Colts, they’ll score anyway in half the time that your “ball control” offense just did.

  2. I don’t know why, but I felt compelled make Leon Washington my desktop background today . ..

I think the bad weather helps the Jets. Let’s hope they can keep it close and capitlize on a late turnover or special teams play.

  3. Well, I was right on the special team play late, but outside of that . . .

Ugh. That might be the most devastating loss I can recall since the playoff loss to Pittsburgh. I don’t care if it was Manning — you can’t let any team run roughshod over you like that and give up two TDs in the final 2:34 minutes of a game, especially with scoring on a 103-yard kickoff. The defense was pushed around most of the game, and especially when it mattered. 0-2 at home. Double ugh.

What a waste of an effort by the offense and special teams. Plus it looks like they lost Coles and Houston for who knows how long. I am absolutely sick. . .

Okay, venting done. I’m sure it won’t look so bad in a few hours . . ..

  4. This loss underscore my point, sadly, about “time of possession.” In fact, the Jets won the “battle of the clock”: 32 minutes to 28 for the Colts. Obviously, the Colts don’t need very much time to score–they scored four TD’s, the longest of which consumed 5.21 in football time–the only way to “keep them off the field” and prevent that kind of scoring is to recover an onside kick, not just one time as we did today, but EVERY time.

So what this game is telling us is that the defense is actually worse than we might have hoped (while the offense because of Pennington’s recover is better)–I suspect, as I’ve been saying since training camp, that the 3-4 isn’t suited to this personel. No NT, of course, and no pass rush, because they’ve got insufficient speed from the outside linebackers–that’s why Rhodes looks like an All-pro: The only pass rush the Jets can generate is from his safety blitzes, which tells you that the front seven isn’t doing anything.

The Colts have a great offense, obviously, but that the Jets couldn’t make one stop in the last few minutes of the game is terribly depressing.

  5. ESPN radio just said coles got his bell rung was fine after…..and have ZERO problem with mangini call to go for TD on 4th and goal. YES i would have kicked, but i have no problem with it….shows guts….love that much guts in his 4th game as a head coach!!! too bad we had to listen to dan dierdorf….what a $%%% moron…..the old “i live in a vaccuum” call of “look at the score its 31-28, and dont forget about mangini not taking the 3pts”. like the rest of the game would have been exactly the same if the jets took the 3 there!! wow…and he gets paid for that. and NOW had to listen to adam schein open the jets post on SNY with “when u have a chance to get pts against manning u have to take them”. GREAT…A LOSER WHO’S VOICE IS BEYOND ANNOYING ON WFAN IN NEW YORK, IS AN “EXPERT” ON FOOTBALL SO HE GETS A GIG ON SNY….AND WE HAVE TO PUT UP WITH IT”.
more imptly….we gotta do something about our run defense….thats all.

  6. Kicker John Nugent caused this loss! After the jets took the lead at 21-17, the kickoff went to the 15 yard line and got returned to the 40. Then after Millers kickoff return, on the next Nugent kickoff, it went to the 11 and returned to the 39. This was to much given up filed position to start with. Nugent has been a burden on the Jets. Get rid of him

  7. you mean kicker “MIKE” NUGENT. i was at the game…great game..cept they gave manning to much time with 2;20 LEFT IN THE 4TH Quarter.

  8. hey sam….gotta think u can come up with plenty of reasons for the loss than 2 kickoffs. =) if u read my first post, curious if u are cool with going for the TD and not the FG….cause i asked 2 random fans in the street i ran into after the game, and somehow the one who answered gave me the “vaccum answer” of….”we should have went for the fg” when i asked why….he said “cause the game would have been tied at the end”. PLEASE TELL ME THAT THIS GUY IS PART OF THE IGNORANT MINORITY!! =) i will check back later on the site, and tmrw of course….but jesus, its ok to ? the call…but to ASSUME THAT THE REST OF THE GAME WOULD HAVE WENT THE SAME WAY IS BEYOND IGNORANT!!!!! why dont people get that…..first dierdorf then a random moron in nyc =) if we go up 17-14….the whole game is changed!!!!!! we could have lost by 50!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. Tough loss, but I loved the effort, and I loved Mangini’s decision to go for the touchdown. For anyone questioning the decision, just look at this way. FG=we’re up by 3 (maybe) and the Colts get the ball on average at about the 30. Missed TD=it’s tied, and the Colts get the ball on their own 2 (95% of the time–yes I know it didn’t work out that way today). Made TD and we’re up 7 kicking off to the Colts. It is WELL worth the risk. If you don’t believe me, check this out…

I only hope Mangini doesn’t let second-guessers spook him into kicking in similar spots in the future. By the way, I wonder if people would be complaining about the onside kick if that hadn’t worked. (I wouldn’t be, but you’d have a much stronger argument against that play than the fourth and goal from the 2.)

  10. I would have kicked the FG but have no problem with anything mangini does as head coach of the NY Jets.

We cant run. We cant stop the run. We get no defensive penetration and rarely pressure the QB. Yet we are there with the best teams in the NFL (I still hold the PAts in high regard).

I am loving it. Just loving it.

  11. Well they proved me wrong since I said they’d lose by more. Again it was a close game. I thought Mangini’s thinking with the goal-line attempt was Indy would be scoring TDs not FGs and he would get few opportunites from so close. I would have kicked it. Most coaches like to have points, for the reason that if you lose by 3 you feel like an idiot, but yes there is no certainty the game would have ended the same. This isn’t Madden it’s the NFL; take points when you can. I suppose the other scenario, which didn’t arise, was Indy getting the ball on the 1. Of course they got it at the 20. Double kick in the ass (I’m not advocating cruelty to animals either).

The defense lost on the ground but had a late stop when they were still in the game and forced a FG (D Rob had a nice tackle in the backfield).

Jets had a rushing game today but it just wasn’t enough. Barlow ran well, not big yardage, but tough yardage.

The Jets kept the ball out of Manning’s hands pretty well. They almost won by following the game plan.

I like this team even in a loss. Playing with the big boys and pulling out all stops. Exciting game. Jets can score (in case nobody noticed – which is something prior teams weren’t proficient at) all they have to do is prevent TDs.

  12. Before Mangini went for the touchdown on 4th and two, what ran through my mind was “I’ll kick the field goal and take the boo’s from the crowd”. Having said that I don’t fault him for taking the chance, Parcell’s would have gone for it, Herm wouldn’t have. I don’t hear anybody saying anything about the gamble that went their way with the on-side kick in the second quarter. I wouldn’t have done that either because I’d be too afraid to let the Colts have the ball at mid field. Football is a game of chance, the Jet’s are more fun to watch this year than whey were last year. I loved the last play of the game, they never give up. I’m starting to warm up to Mangini now I was a proponent of him at first

  13. So close. I expected to get blown out, so I was very pleasantly surprised.

On the good side – the offense moved the ball well and we finally got a running game going. The special teams were great with the onsides kick and Miller’s TD. And I loved Mangini being aggressive. I thought 2.5 yards was a bit far to go for it on the fourth down play, but give him credit for going for the W.

On the down side, the defense just didn’t get it done. Aside from Ellis’ sacks, there wasn’t much of a pass rush. And Nugent has to improve his kickoffs. I give him credit for a perfect onside kick, but he can’t keep kicking it to only the 10 or 15. Was I the only one thinking they should’ve done another onside kick after Miller’s TD?

When Indy went up 24-21, this was the first time in a long time I felt confident we were going to come back. We did, but unfortunately we scored way too quickly. I knew Indy was going to come back, I was just hoping they’d score quickly so we’d have another shot. Then we botched the kickoff and it was over.

  14. I think that sums it up – they are a heck of a lot more fun to watch this year. Every game has gone down to the end, it doesn’t get much more exciting than that. Too bad we’ve only pulled out 2 of them so far.

  15. We got beaten by Peyton Manning. A guy who has re-written the record book as a QB, is a certain Hall-of-Famer and an historically great regular season QB. His team was almost undefeated last season and now is 4-0. But, our little gang green almost slayed the giant. I loved Mangini going for it. I was at the game and I heard no second-guessing. And, let’s face it Chad screwed that up. If he just throws it away, we give the Colts back the ball on the 2, not the 20. And, we held the Colts on that drive. I guess I’ll hear more criticism about Dwayne Robertson, who played a great game. Remember why the Colts had to kick a field goal? D. Rob absolutely stuffed Rhodes at the goal line. And, he had consistently good pressure on Manning. Nobody mentioned the horrible pass interference call on Miller? That play was right in front of our row, and that’s also why some more lubricated members of my section stayed after the game to give the ref the “a-hole” chant. I don’t believe in moral victories, but I’m starting to really like this team. Now, let’s go down to Jacksonville and get to 3-2.

  16. well said will………u constantly have intelligent posts. this site is clearly for the intelligent =) all of u back the call on 4th down, one of u even spelled it out that we dont live in a vacuum…that if we went up 17-14 that means the game would have been tied at the end! (all of us should email nbc to have dan dier-idiot permantly banned from all nfl broadcasts). i thought pass int call on miller was questionable as well. D rob was active, but overall we gotta stuff the run better. miller cant cover anyone though….2nd to last play for IND miller lets reciever drive him into end zone, curls back at the one for the catch…poor technique that i expect mangini to correct rt away. tough one next week then 2 home games vs mia and det….we now KNOW we can play with anyone…and the confidence will continue to grow.

  17. agree 1000000% with u matt…..great article on espn as well. Cant believe some guy in the street (with an ice coffee in his hand so that should have tipped me off he was a little moronic)….said we would have been tied at the end if we went for 3. Imagine how u would have felt if u heard that answer!!!! and YES…u cant ? that call especially after we took a MUCH BIGGER risk with the onsides kick.

  18. I was actually impressed with the defense until the final 6 minutes of the game. Manning didn’t look comfortable until then. The defensive play in the last 6 minutes And the missed KO return is the reason we lost. Chad had terrible field position and never really had a chance to drive the ball.

AFA the FG debate from the first half goes, I am glad he went for it. To get that close and not get in is frustrating, but it was the right decision. It looked to me like Chad had a chance to take it in himself if he just turned upfield rather than throwing into double coverage on the sideline.

As much as it rarely works, I liked the laterals on the last play of the game. It showed that the team was still fighting. I just hope Coles is okay. I know reports are that he just had his bell rung and I hope that’s the case. As for Houston, it’s pretty obvious by his behavior that he’s done for a while. Just as he was starting to put things together a little too.

  19. My group was 50-50 on kicking the field goal, before the decison was made. I agree with going for the TD, but if the decision was made that they were in four down territory, would have preferred they try the creative 4th down play the down before, rather than the standard run into the line.

Also, for a team that took so many chances and was so creative on offense, why not take some chances on defense during the final two drives? I was screaming for just one all out blitz!!

One of the most exciting Jet games I have ever seen, I am loving the direction of the team. We have a shot to make the playoffs this year, and while I was one of the few optimists this year that predicted 8-8 I never thought we could make a run at the postseason. Kudos to the staff, Woody should extend all their contracts right now.

  20. Everyone is hung up on the field goal. If they did kick it, then they would kicked off instead of the Colts starting on their own 2 yard line. It would have changed the way the game was played. You cannot take something that happened in the third quarter and extrapolate it to the 4th quarter.

The Jets have no pass rush. But that kicker Nugent did not help with his lousy kickoffs. He was an overrated drfat pick and should be dumped for giving Indy great field position.
