Let the streaking continue…

by prince on November 30th, 2006 at 2:17 pm

Is this better?

My post last week was a little pre-mature. Every journey begins with a first step, and this past Sunday the Jets took theirs. I watched a lot of football this past weekend, keeping an eye on the Jets future opponents and on the wild-card and division competition. I liked some of the things I saw and downright hated others. What I liked the best was that the Jets win over Houston allows me to write another streaking post.

Apparently Will Farrel’s butt didn’t agree with some. This week, I’ve chosen this lovely woman to represent our beloved streaking Jets. Can the Jets keep the streak going? Which teams represents the most likely derailer? (more…)

Audible: Gameplan for the Packers

by Bassett on November 30th, 2006 at 10:53 am

So the Jets head to Green Bay this weekend to take on the Packers. Think this one is in the bag? The Jets are ranked one notch higher right now in Team Efficiency than the Pack on Football Outsiders. You know my rule of thumb in picking games: if one team is very close to another in team efficiency, I would generally pick whichever team is at home. From a tale of the tape, the Jets have a better offense, worse defense but significantly better special teams unit. It’s my hope that if the game turns into one of field position, the Jets will win based on their special teams play.

So how do you gameplan against a team, who is on short rest with a banged up quarterback?

Difficulty: you can’t use the word “gunslinger” in describing Favre’s play … :D

And the Winner Is …

by Bassett on November 29th, 2006 at 7:26 pm

After spending far too much of my work day cutting little strips of paper to write names on, the winner of the Jonathan Vilma charity event at Fusion 215 is Bill Carter. If you didn’t win, but would still like to go to the event, you can register for the event as either a regular attender or VIP which guarantees meeting Mr. Vilma in person.

Congratulations Bill! We expect a full report on how the Giants players were crying all night like babies and how Jonathan Vilma whupped their asses while drinking them under the table and stealing their girlfriends.

Biz vs. The Nuge

by Bassett on November 29th, 2006 at 2:44 pm

Randy Lange writes an article on Mike Nugent, which highlights Nugent’s focus. Lange also throws in a stat about Nugent’s kicks this season as compared to last year.

One problem area remains — kickoffs. His key numbers are virtually identical to his underwhelming rookie season, from the yard line his kicks reach (6.3 after 11 games last year, 6.7 this year) to the yard line they’re returned to (29.2 to 29.1).

His hang times have been shorter (3.87 seconds to 3.79), yet he’s gotten 10 kicks to the goal line this year compared to seven all last season.

It’s kind of ironic, because I thought during the offseason, Nugent was working out with Olindo Mare (via Mike Westhoff) to work on the distance of his kicks. Funny how he works out with an AFC East rival player and then Nugent’s kicks don’t hang as long and are shorter … I wonder what that’s all about … hmm …

Seriously though, the investment has been made, I want Nugent to succeed, I just wonder what the Jets have a change in store for kickoffs next year if there isn’t some progress between now and then.

Reminder: Vilma!

by Bassett on November 29th, 2006 at 12:46 pm

Just a friendly reminder that I will be picking the name of the lucky winner who gets to booze it up with Jonathan Vilma next week at Fusion 215 in Manhattan. If you haven’t sent an email to me at thejetsblog@gmail.com and you want to be entered in the drawing, please do so by 5PM Eastern today.

Links: Know Your Snap Count

by Bassett on November 29th, 2006 at 9:59 am
  • An update on Mangblog!
  • An interesting article about Pennington from last week that I missed. Not sure about the total premise, but it’s definitely worth a read.
  • Cimini writes a blurb about one of Bradway’s draft picks. Rich, we know Bradway kills below the third round, it’s the stuff above that which drew issues.
  • A Schlegel article with … wait for it … a wild boar hunting reference!
  • Excellent article (and here) on the differences between the NY teams right now, and why they are different.
  • Tom Rock makes a joke that rolls around somewhere in the recesses of my brain, but couldn’t get on paper.

Welcome to the C-Gap

Heard this audio of Belichick on Czabe.com, too bad I have no idea what a Rocket or the 7-route is, but it sure sounds impressive …

Bent’s Thoughts from Across the Pond – Week 12

by Bent on November 28th, 2006 at 11:20 am

Houston. At home. The way the Jets have played this should theoreticaly be a comfortable win (although inevitably with the threat of a last ditch comeback). Would things pan out that way though?

Let’s find out…

* Not much doing this week in the first half, although compared with last week, I guess 9-3 is a shootout.
* I clearly haven’t got the Herm mindset out of my system, because I found myself thinking “Hmmm, with a six point lead, if we concede two touchdowns on their next two possessions we can still tie it with a TD and a two point conversion.” (I must have also forgotten how hopeless the Jets are – and always have been – at converting the two).
* It was nice to see a much maligned player who has been labelled one of the biggest disappointments of the year step up and make a big hit on kickoff coverage. Yep…way to go, Nuge.
* Speaking of Nuge…huhwhat? Here’s me sat 4,000 miles away on the internet waiting to see which yard line our punt was fielded at and suddenly I hear we’ve apparently kicked a 54 yarder! Do field goals count if they bounce over?

Jones Arrested for DWI

by Bassett on November 28th, 2006 at 8:45 am

Word has hit the papers today that Adrian Jones was arrested for driving while intoxicated. Apparently, Jones wouldn’t take the breathylizer test, which I believe is the same thing as failing a test in New York. Jones wasn’t active on for the first time on Sunday, and was fined $20,000 by the team, not the NFL. Just as reference, if you recall Tyler Brayton was fined $25,000 by the NFL for kneeing Jeramy Stevens in the groin, while Clinton Portis was fined $20,000 by the NFL last year for not wearing matching shoes, so go figure.

The Jets have had a bunch of good eggs who have kept their head down and not gotten in trouble for a number of years now, I can’t even think of the last time a player on the Jets was arrested for anything. I had been wondering how Mangini & Tannenbaum would respond to an incident like this, and now we know. They’re clearly not going to go lightly on anyone who behaves in this way.

With Jones now having lost his starting job, I imagine that during the offseason the front office will push Jones out the door, partially because he isn’t vital, and partially to send a message to the rest of the team.

PSA: Who Wants to Hang With J-Vil?

by Bassett on November 27th, 2006 at 3:32 pm

Anyone want to go meet Jonathan Vilma at a new A-list bar in Manhattan next week? TJB has secured a free ticket to a charity event in New York City next Thursday night and will give it away. The event is called Standing Up and Giving Back and will be hosted by Jonathan Vilma, as well as Antonio Pierce & Frank Walker of the Giants. It’s to benefit each players charity, for which we are always in favor.

The event runs from 7-11PM on December 7th and looks like it has like a cocktail hour with auction. To learn more about the event, see the flyer, check out the production company for the event, and to learn more about the location, Fusion 215 (Chelsea area) check out their site or read a review.

Looks like a good chance to check out some celebs, see one of your favorite players and drink some free booze. To win the free ticket, just email me before 5PM East Coast on Wednesday at thejetsblog@gmail.com, and I will pull names out of a hat Wednesday afternoon.

Also, please let me know in the email that you work/live in the area, this was a nice gesture from the production company and I want to make sure that whoever wins can show up. No real rules here, just your name and information are fine, but if you want to write a tribute to Jonathan Vilma or anything else that’s fine too. The better/funnier the email you write, the bigger the piece of paper I will put into the hat.

Good luck, and also feel free to pass this offer onto other Jets or Giants fans…

Thoughts from the Game

by Bassett on November 27th, 2006 at 8:59 am

Hi gang!  Well the time with family was great, but my laptop’s hard drive crashing last Wednesday wasn’t so great.  I haven’t had access to anything, otherwise I would have posted some stuff up.  Hope you all had a great holiday in the meantime.

On the drive back from Virginia to Massachusetts yesterday, we got up early and drove by the Meadowlands on our way up, driving on 95, I even saw a dude with Jets flags on his car chugging a Miller Lite as he drove towards the stadium, add in the fact that it was about 10:15AM, and that made it even more awesome.

Anyway, I listened to a lot of the pregame show, and then we stopped for lunch at my favorite deli outside of New York, Reins Deli in Vernon CT and we actually got to watch much of the first half, then hop back into the car and listen to a bunch more.  Here are some thoughts about what I saw and heard:

  • The running game was horrendous, when the leading rusher of the game had 17 yards, that tells you something.  Overall, the Jets rushed the ball 26 times for 27 yards.
  • The defense looked good at bringing pressure and racking up four sacks, with Bryan Thomas applying two, Shaun Ellis one and a half, and Dewayne 1/2 a sack between them.
  • Eric Smith saw more time, how did he look?
  • Coles & Cotch had big days again, with both of them getting over the 100 yard mark.  Coles catch that led to the first field goal was quite athletic, while Cotchery showed patience and what he can do when he has some seperation from his defender.
  • How about that Mike Nugent?  4/4 with a long of 54 yards.  Apparently, Nugent was missing some kicks before the game in warmups, hopefully this was good for his confidence.
  • Chad Pennington briefly had to come out after getting swallowed up on a play where Mario Williams got free of D’Brick and hit him hard during the throw.  Other than one sack a few knockdowns and some hurries Pennington had the time he needed, the offensive line again played well in protection.
  • Mario Williams didn’t have the best technique, but he was a physical against D’Brick, for the most part though, D’Brick played well.
  • Look out on the schedule for the Bills and the Dolphins.  The Bills just beat the faltering Jaguars, while the Dolphins have rattled off four straight.
