The Trainer’s Room: Dwight to IR

by prince on December 3rd, 2006 at 9:46 am

In a somewhat unexpected move, Tim Dwight was added to the injured reserve yesterday, ending his season.

ESPN’s version of the AP release is here.

For a perspective on what impact this might have on today’s game, check out Andrew Gross’ teriffic Jets blog here.

This is unfortunate news.  Dwight was a nice role-player for the Jets when active.  He was a very secure punt returner, who I had a lot of confidence in receiving a kick in a big spot.  Further, he had started to make some big catches for the Jets.

WR Wallace Wright, who had been on the practice squad, was added to the active roster for today’s game.

I would like to see Brad Smith get more opportunities at receiver today because of this unfortunate news.  Although Dwight was steady, secure, and above average at PR, I never expected him to break off a big run-back.  Perhaps Leon Washington, or someone else to be identified, can add an additional spark this week.  After Patrick Ramsey came into the game and threw downfield, I would not be shocked to see Wallace Wright get a chance to make a big play at some point.  Wright has been one of Mangini’s ”Players of the Week” for the practice squad.  This press conference with Mangini is an interesting read, because it gives some interesting clues regarding the importance of the practice squad.  Mangini uses the acronym of PHD for poor, hungry, driven, to describe the motivating effect the practice squad player’s have on the team.

This is a good opportunity for Smith, but I’d imagine J-Mac will be first in line for extra reps. Maybe Coles will be used in the slot on third down.

Shame for Dwight, who had just started to play an important role.

And before anyone suggests it…NO, Justin Miller should not be back there fielding punts. Leon looked comfortable back there earlier in the year, so I’d expect it to be him. Will this change Mangini’s plan for the RB rotations, I wonder?
