Free Agent Focus: BJ Askew

With today as the first day that anyone can apply franchise & transition tags to free agents we will be looking at the free agents currently within the Jets organization, starting in this post with BJ Askew.

Name: B.J. Askew
Position: Fullback
Stats: 5 Games Started
6 Att – 11 yards, 1.8 YPA, 0TD
9 Rec – 50 Yards, 5.6 YPC, 0TD

Breakdown: In his first year as a feature fullback, Askew played serviceably, but wasn’t shocking the world with his abilities. Fullback isn’t exactly a position that gets much note (only 5 starts) in Schottenheimer’s offense which seems more reliant on H-Backs and spread formations over fullbacks. Statistically, Askew’s carries and catches were nothing to brag about, but there are no real moments that come to mind off the top of my head where he totally blew/ruined plays by blowing blocks, etc.

Because of the value that the Jets place on the postion, letting Askew go or bringing in a free agent doesn’t seem to matter much, other than the fact that they know what they have in Askew. Askew might be back in 2007, but there is no need to re-sign him before he hits the street, let him test the market first, then see what the cost to bring him back in might be. I have no real knowledge of the situation, but I imagine the Jets would like to move Stacey Tutt up a roster spot, but it remains to be seen if he is ready for more work as of yet. Fullback is a position that the Jets could probably upgrade easily and not spend a lot of money doing, so I would imagine the Jets will be active trying to find someone before they would re-sign Askew.
