News: Barlow to Be Cut

It’s clear that most signs pointed to RB Kevan Barlow (131 Att, 371 Yds, 6TD) being cut this offseason, even after his comments about his willingness to restructure his contract. Today, there is news from Dave Hutchinson in the the Star-Ledgerthat Barlow will in fact be cut by the Jets with word possibly coming as soon as today. This from the Star-Ledger, and most likely, Barlow’s agent:

Barlow has requested and been granted his release after refusing to take a paycut, a person close to the running back told The Star-Ledger last night. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the club has yet to make an announcement. That announcement could come today.

Barlow, who was to earn a $2.75 million in base salary in 2007, had an injury-slowed season with the Jets after being acquired from the 49ers last August for a fourth-round pick. He finished with 370 yards rushing and six touchdowns on 131 carries, just a 2.8-yard average.

Although Barlow did have a rough season, he definitely helped the Jets in goal-line situations and took a lot of pounding. His best game, in my opinion was the win in New England, where he ran the ball for his season best, 75 yards. But that was also the problem when in your best game, you run for 75 yards, that’s not very good. Barlow might have seen his last action as a professional, and certainly isn’t worth $2.75 million in the upcoming season … there has to be something better.

It will be interesting to see when word gets out on this. The Jets might in fact make an announcement today, but I imagine when they do, Barlow won’t be the only one sent packing.

  1. I have to admit the Barlow trade is one of the few bad moves made by the new regime of Tannenbaum and Mangini, LLC. He was solid in goal line and in the New England game, but other then that Barlow had few bright spots. I guess I wouldn’t be that upset if we traded a 6th or 7th, but a 4th round pick seemed like a little much at the time. I know Blaylock was horrible and Houston was always banged up, but I think we could have gotten by with Washington, Blaylock and Houston sharing the load. It will be interesting to see if Barlow starts running his mouth about the Jets when he gets cut, remember he did the same thing when the Niners traded him.

I wonder what other guys may be at risk of getting cut? David Barrett?

  2. Barlow was a panic move when the Suggs deal fell through, rookie mistake, they are entitled to one of those.

Cutting Barrett would be a big mistake, he would immediately become the third best corner on the open market and would command more than he is scheduled to earn in 07.

He was slowed by injury last year, if they do not like him they should at least keep him and trade him when he gets healthy, can get a pick for him. Its not like they need room to get under the cap.
