News: Jets Announce Stuff We Know

by Bassett on February 22nd, 2007 at 8:36 am

So the Jets finally made the announcements yesterday about all the things we have been talking about for a few weeks now (DL Coach Quinn, Secondary Coach McIntyre, etc.) but there were a few things that bore mentioning.

  1. Our scoop on former Patriots coach Brian Daboll was correct, he did in fact get the QB coaching job which Schotty held last year. So look for him in the “line of succession” of controlling this offense.
  2. Trey Teague was cut, which signifies the organization’s faith in Mangold, but highlights the doubt on Teague’s recovery and his fitness at competing for any of the other jobs on the right side. If the organization thinks he can’t come back and play, then this was the right move, but let’s just hope the Jets don’t have injury issues on the line this year, as they are likely to lose two guys who could be “potential” starters between Teague and Clement.
  3. David Barrett was not let go by the team. Commenter wayne makes a good point when he said releasing David Barrett, even if injured would be a big mistake. Stating Barrett “… on the open market … would command more than he is scheduled to earn in 07. He was slowed by injury last year, if they do not like him they should at least keep him and trade him when he gets healthy, [they] can get a pick for him. It’s not like they need room to get under the cap.”

Cutting Teague seems to be a pretty good indication that the Jets will pursue an interior lineman in free agency or the draft.

perhaps i missed it but what is the fascination with Daboll? If he is such an up and comer why did the Patriots Jet-tison him?

wayne, I don\’t know that the Patriots fired him or released him in any way. He was given a better title (not necessarily actual job) and that meets the requirements of moving to another team while under a current contract …

Purely conjecture, but I would guess that Mangini wanted him on his staff last year, but it was too soon.

Clearly Mangini and Daboll were close, as they worked together for a while under BB. Mangini knows what he\’s getting with Daboll. Daboll is of the same philosophy as Mangini and Schottenheimer … attack an opponents\’ weaknesses, which I think is the right model. If a team has a great front seven, spread out your offense rather than max protect… play against their strengths rather than into them.

Daboll seems like a fiery guy, and I think his current knowledge combined with tutoring under Schottenheimer makes for a solid replacement whenever Schottenheimer takes off, likely in a year or two. Although it looks like a lateral move for Daboll, young Patriots OC Josh McDaniels isn\’t going anywhere for a while. Daboll was logjammed behind him. So it shores up the replacement for Schottenheimer, when he leaves.

When the Mangini-Belichick feud was being played up, rumor had it that Mangini was recruiting sme of the coaches from the Pats staff before he left and that’s what really got under BB’s skin. If that is the case, ould Daboll have been one of the coaches Mangini was after?

I completely disagree. How many guys do we carry at CB who cannot start? We just signed Poteat. We probably have to keep Miller for KR. Drew Coleman may make the team again. Why carry Barrett too? We need to upgrade at CB.

I don’t mind waiting until later to see what we can get in the draft. But I will be sad if we keep both Poteat and Barrett.
