Derrick Blaylock and Bobby Hamilton were both waived by the Jets yesterday. I have to say that the Blaylock move was completely expected, but the Hamilton move did suprise me somewhat.
As far as Blaylock, after the first few games of the season and with four active running backs the Jets went away from Blaylock for a few reasons most notably that he wasn’t productive and he was terrible in pass coverage.
As far as Hamilton, it seems to be a move that prohibits the Jets from releasing Kimo von Oelhoffen … or at least the to relegate him into a backup role on money that would otherwise be burned. After the report the other day about Kimo’s imminent departure it’s hard to know what to expect. Andrew Gross addresses this on Jets Journal by writing
while all reports are that fellow veteran defensive end Kimo von Oelhoffen will be released by Saturday, a source close to the situation told me the exact oppositve yesterday. That not only does von Oelhoffen want to stay with the Jets, the Jets want him to return and not even under a restructured contract.
On this, I am inclined to lean towards Andrew Gross’ source over Rich Cimini’s, as it seems more in keeping with the team and they like his “leadership qualities” blah blah blah. I still think keeping Kimo is a mistake, but I think that keeping him as a starter is the biggest mistake, so hopefully the open roster spot that Hamilton’s departure opens will be for the starter. As long as he is off the field more than he is on it, I will be a happy camper.
If you are keeping track at home, I think this now puts the Jets right around $25 million under the cap.

Why did the Blaylock cut take so long to happen? Finally we have some room in our backfield, Cedric Houston and Leon Washington must be thrilled. They can both hold there breathes now until the Jets bring in another RB. Unfortunutely I don’t think it’s going to be Michael Turner with AJ Smith slapping the highest tender on him yesterday. That dam AJ Smith at it again!
The Bobby Hamilton move surprised me a bit too. He was a solid back-up who also had a great locker room presence. I thought it would have been better to keep Hamilton who is cheaper and in my view more productive then KVO at this stage in his career. Anymore cuts coming besides Ramsey? -
I’m still scratching my head over the idea of giving away millions of dollars to Kimo because he’s a good locker room presence. Why not apply those dollars to signing AD, who is also reputed to be a great team guy? Very curious.

KvO is probably being retained to work on two-gap schemes with whatever DEs the Jets choose to bring in for next season in FA or through the draft. If let go, Shaun Ellis would be the most familar DE in the scheme with a grand total of one year experience. On another note, ESPN is reporting that Jerricho has agreed to terms on a contract extension with the Jets.

I’m on board with Ilan. With 25 mill in room, we can afford to keep KVO. Tuiter, backup, and/or situational player.
Now who do we go and get to fill the hole from Hamilton. Theres alot of guys out there in FA/DE with potential. Lets sign some Pegs! I’m thinking, alot of low frofile names being signed. Just not right away.On another note.
No Turner for us. Which I’m perfectly happy with. Rather keep the draft picks (gives me more to watch on th 28th). How about Justin Griffith as a FB/RB and Michael Bush in the late 2nd/3rd round? -
Don’t cry about Bobby Hamilton, it’s pretty obvious that the Jets are targeting DE at the draft and having 2 teachers on the payroll makes even less sense than keeping Kimo. I’d be shocked if the Jets draft an RB in the first 2 rounds. I’m betting DL and CB, but I’m hoping that they either draft Grubbs or sign Steinbach or Dielman.

It’s official, Patrick Ramsey was cut. What a surprise.

How dare they? Not release these players, but do so without leaking to Cimini first?
