Buzz: McCareins to the Eagles?

Adam Caplan on Scout.com is officially the man… this is the best blog by far that I have found during free agency to keep up with all the rumors and general mayhem that is free agency.

While he remains a New York Jet, veteran WR Justin McCareins may not remain on the team for much longer. McCareins is due close to $3 million in salary.

A league source told scout.com that the Philadelphia Eagles had strong interest in signing McCareins had they not acquired WR Terrell Owens in March of 2004 when McCareins hit the free agent market prior to signing with the Jets.

If this is true, are they dealing with the Jets? It’s a game of chicken now… will the Jets flinch before the roster bonus?

  1. I sure as hell hope so. It is one thing not to spend our cap space wisely on real players who can fill needs on our team for at least the next three years.

It is another thing to throw money away on someone we hope another team will trade with us to take off our hands.

  2. It would be great to pick up another day 1 draft pick in exchange for McCarreins. I’m not sure if any team would pay such a high price, given that he may be cut in lieu of being paid a roster bonus.

  3. If this is true, who does Philly have that we could want? I may be out in the dark on this one, but its viable that we could benefit from this trade.

  4. If this is such a great blog, why does it state that McCairens was a free agent when the Jets acquired him? The Jets traded a second round choice for him.

  5. Actually Roger Vick, he was a free agent sign by the Jets in 2004. He was a restricted free agent though, so they needed to send a second round choice to the Titans.

    Not considered a trade.

It’s like saying the Jets traded for Curtis Martin.

  7. Please do a fact check, the article indicates his SALARY is 3 million, not a roster bonus.

Obviously you cut him if it is a roster bonus, but if that is his salary he is probably underpaid in this market and should have value in a trade.

  8. McCareins has been a major disappointment – he is weak on run-blocking, doesn’t come out of his breaks well, and doesn’t have the speed needed to stretch the field. If the team can get anything in return for the guy, I say pull the trigger.

  9. Wayne: I can’t disagree with you more. $3m for a soft WR like McCairens, with less than average hands is way too much! This is the kind of receiver that if I were the Jets, I would trade for a 7th round pick (or a slice of good pizza!). He isn’t worth 25% of $3m.

He doesn’t have much trade value, unfortunately. Anything they get, would be a steal.
