So since there hasn’t been much fanfare about what the Jets have done, here’s some cobbling together the bits of information that we at TJB have run across and some scouting data from an *ahem* ‘worldwide leader’ in scouting. Let me know if you have confirmed reports of others and I will draw up some info tonight.
Kenyon Coleman 6’5″ 295lbs (DE)
The Deal: Made a visit over the weekend to Hempstead according to reports. MDS notes it in the Sun in an interesting article today.
Scouting: Athletic, quick and has solid pass-rushing skills. Can change directions smoothly, can redirect and is pretty effective in space. Flashes upfield abilities and has some pass-rush moves on the outside. Lacks ideal bulk and power and is a much better pass rusher than run-stopper. Doesn’t always play with leverage and tends to get high. Needs to learn to use hands to protect his body. Allows blockers to get into his body and tie him up. Isn’t very tenacious. His intensity has been questioned at times, and hasn’t improved much as a pro. He can be worn down and has his athleticism neutralized when opponents run at him.
David Bowens 6’3″ 265lbs (DE)
The Deal: Being considered by the Jets, Bowens has been a Dolphin since 2001, he has seen limited time on the field, for a pretty good front seven. Bowens did have five sacks and had a fumble recovery along with 14 tackles in his limited time. Five sacks? Not bad for a part time player in the 3-4.
Scouting: Bowens is active, instinctive and has good pass-rushing ability. He plays under control in space and has some value on special teams. He plays with good awareness when reacting to blocking patterns. He has some functional strength. He is an effective all-around tackler. He has good initial quickness and snap anticipation as a pass rusher. He has active hands and flashes good leverage at times. He has the quickness and speed to get on a blocker’s edge and close on quarterbacks. He can redirect and quickly work back inside across a blocker’s face. He flashes some countermoves and can come clean off stunts. But Bowens is an undersized finesse player with questionable durability. He must stay on the move against the run and won’t hold up setting the edge as an every-down player. He lacks the power base to effectively transfer speed to power on his rush.
Darian Barnes 6’2″ 241lbs (RB)
The Deal: Is this Jersey boy (Toms River) the next FB for the Jets? According to reports, he is more what Mangini looks for in a Fullback, as a “thumper” type.
Scouting: Physical, powerful and explosive. He is a good lead blocker who is could be used as a receiver.
TJ Duckett 6’0″ 240 (RB)
The Deal: The Jets are looking for a powerful back to pair with Leon Washington and are expecting a visit from Duckett on Tuesday. Who knows this arrangement better than TJ Duckett?
Scouting: Duckett is big and strong and provides a nice change-of-pace from a smaller back. Duckett was used to this role working with Warrick Dunn in Atlanta. Is well aided by the blocking of a strong fullback.
More on this later tonight…

Do the letters JAG seem appropriate?

“Meanwhile, there were unconfirmed rumors that the Jets were thinking of swapping their first pick, 25th overall, and a defensive starter, to the Lions for the second overall pick.”
I found this on The Journal News’s website. I think that if they can do this to get a big time play maker (ie. Calvin Johnson or Adrian Peterson) then they should do it. They can get a solid DE in the draft or free agency. What do u all think?
-
Yeah Nick I’ve read the same rumors involving Detroit’s #2 pick for the Jets #25 and a defensive starter most likely Vilma or D-Robertson. I really don’t know about this one and how must Vilma feel with his name being involved in all these trade rumors this offseason. First Washington and now Detroit, I’d be interested to hear from Vilma to see if he’s a little confused by all this.
Also looks like another RB option is off the market with Travis Henry signing with Denver. I’m not sure if the Jets really had any legit interest in him anyway.
-
I really hope that they don’t trade up to #2. They’d have to give up Vilma and/or Rhodes, plus their 25th pick, plus who knows what else (more picks?).
Not to mention, I personally am not convinced that Adrian Peterson is going to be all that great. This seems to be a weaker year for RBs, and we have a lot of needs. I’d rather trade up just a few spots to grab Carricker, or maybe a guy like Lynch if he slides far enough. Why trade up to #2 for Peterson if we could potentially get Michael Turner cheaper in a few months?
-
Has anyone heard if Dewayne Robertson will be asked to slim-down and move to the DE position?
-
Anyone know if the Jets have interest in TE Jeramy Stevens to complement Chris Baker in 2 TE sets?
-
DRob is way too small to play DE in a 3-4 scheme, he is the likely trade bait.
-
I am underwhelmed by these choices. The one thing that a rookie DE can usually do is be a situational pass-rusher, so why spend money to get one when you can draft one in the 2nd or 3rd round (or later…this draft is deep at fast, somewhat undersized DEs)? Duckett (like Chris Brown) runs way too upright and gets blasted, often negating his size. IMO, Dominic Rhodes, who is much smaller, is a tougher inside runner. Heck, Ron Dayne’s better than Duckett. At this point, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Jets signed only minor, quasi-projects, like the Raiders’ back up QB. That draft rumor is downright nuts. Plus, how would the Jets replace Vilma, D-Rob or Rhodes? In the draft? Good luck. Trading up a few spots to get Carriker or to get a guy who is sliding down or a rival might take before 25 makes sense. The Jets D is thin and trading one of the Jets’ best defensive players for a higher draft pick (and IMO only Calvin Johnson is truly top 5 worthy) sounds like a Bradway move.

ESPN is reporting that the Jets have traded their 2nd round pick for Thomas Jones and Chicago’s 2nd round pick.
-
So Chicago trades a productive RB who should still have a couple good seasons left to move up 5 spots in the second round? Unless the pick we gave up was Washington’s 2nd… I haven’t seen this reported anywhere else though, so it’s still speculation.
-
We would be trading away the Skin’s pick. He is productive, but he 37th pick does seem a little high for another “Washington-type” back.
-
This is, as the article notes, all according to “league sources,” so I will take it with a grain of salt.
-
I’ve watched Jones quite a bit over his career, and though he’s only 5’10″, he’s got quite a bit of power behind his 220 pound frame. He’s not the IDEAL short-yardage back, but he can certainly get the job done from what I’ve seen.
I would assume this move precludes us from signing Duckett, unless he’s willing to accept a role strictly as a short-yard type of guy. I live in Washington, and from what I’ve heard and read I get the sense that TJ is looking for more playing time than what I imagine the Jets would have to offer.
-
What does everyone think about Lance Briggs?
-
This is a joke that you guys arent ecstatic with this deal. This guy had 1200 yards splitting time last yr and all we gave up for him was 10 slots in the draft? We still have two seconds and keep our first round pick and have obtained a more than serviceable back. Now hopefully, Briggs will join him on the jets.
-
I like the trade. We move back 26 picks and get a proven back that can play for another 2 maybe 3 years. This allows them to focus on D and O-Line for those earlier picks and not worry about an RB.
The Pats gave up a 2nd AND 7th rounder for Wes Welker, in comparison this was an amazing deal.
-
He is only 28 so has more than a couple of years left, no major injury problems, has playoff experience, can catch the ball too, and must be a team player since willing to split time in the past.
Go JETS!
-
If the deal is as reported then its a fine deal for the Jets. He will fit nicely into the Jets’ offensive scheme. He is a good pass catcher, something that couldnt be exploited with Grossman at QB. Chad’s gonna love him.
And the alternatives were not much.
-
if anyone thinks this isnt a good,im sorry,GREAT trade for the New York J-E-T-S,then you need some serious psychological help…not only did we get our starting running back, but all we had to do was trade down 26 picks. We still have our first round and two second round picks for Jones, who rushed for more than 1200 yards in each of the past two seasons(the first bear to do that since “SWEETNESS” himself.Jones was also the postseason’s second leading rusher, averaging 5.5 yds a carry and 4 td’s in three games.Dont forget,we got a good up close and personal look at him on Nov 19th when he torched us for 121 yds on 23 carries..but most importantly…no major injuries!!Finally,we have a front office and coach who is doing whats best for the team!!

Pingback: thejetsblog.com » A New LB? David Bowens Signs With Jets

Both Coleman and Bowen seem like situational pass rushers, with Bowen having the advantage of being an excellent special teamer (in the comments section of the MIA paper, the fans seemed more concerned with losing that aspect of his game).
The RB’s make sense but still think it is a red flag that Betts got most of the carries last year when Portis went down. If they dont trust and ex number one pick to carry the load when the top guy goes down, why would Jets want him?
I have been scouring the wires, only other reported visit is allegedly by ?Tuisisopo? the back up QB of the raiders, no idea why they would want him.
