Local Sports Anchor, Jerry Girard Passes

Thanks to miketorse for sending on this information on the passing of former New York area sports broadcaster Jerry Girard.

“He was very popular with the viewers, very popular in the newsroom,” Karen Scott, news director for WPIX-TV Channel 11, said yesterday. “He was a hard worker, and he definitely knew his sports.”

Growing up, getting my sports fix on WPIX, Girard was a mainstay of my youth, so I am sorry to hear that a legend like Girard has now passed, he was 74.

  1. I’m right there with you Brian, I grew up with Girard as well. I’m seriously bumming about his death. I usually went to bed right after I watched his sportscast on WPIX when I was a little guy. As I got older I was able to stay up to watch The Odd Couple and the Honeymooners too!

  2. had the pleasure to meet Jerry once (a friend interned for him one in the late 80s). I remember him being a really nice man during that brief visit. In the pre-ESPN era, we relied on the Girads and the amazing Mazer to give us our nightly sports news. When Yankee games started at 8pm back in those days, the games would still end by 10:30, and I would watch the news so I could see Jerry do the highlights then I would stuff towels under my door so I could watch the Odd Couple & the Honeymooners. Losing Jerry is losing a small pice of my childhood.

  3. btw – towel stuffing was to prevent the TV light glare from alerting the folks that the 11pm TV curfew was violated!
