Draft: Local Prospects
I thought I would respond to RK’s comment in an earlier post with a separate blog post. He asked if there were any decent prospects locally because he didn’t want the Jets to miss out on the next Colston. Therefore, I have compiled a list of small school prospects from the local area, although as I am British and therefore have no clue what constitutes “local” in this context, I have identified guys from schools in the New England area too, because I felt that was local enough. Of course, “the next Colston” – if there is one this year – could come from further afield, but here’s the list anyway. Anyone care to make a prediction as to whether any of these could be a good sleeper?
Daren Stone is a DB from Maine with some decent athletic numbers.
Zak DeOssie, the son of former Cowboy Steve DeOssie, is a full-sized inside linebacker with an Ivy League (Brown) pedigree, that both the Jets and Pats are sure to have interest in. He also long snaps and had a sparkling short shuttle time at his Pro day.
David Ball has one thing in common with Colston and that’s that he was the outstanding receiver at the East West Shrine Game. He also ran quite slow at his Pro day, but ran a very fast short shuttle.
Corey Graham, like Ball, is from New Hampshire. He is a safety.
Ryan Fuselier is a wide receiver from Dartmouth.
Justise Hairston is a RB who went to Central Connecticut State.
Chad Upshaw is a tight end who went to Buffalo.
Edward McCarthy is another Ivy Leaguer (Yale). He is an offensive tackle.
Chris Turner is a wideout from Wagner College.
The prospects from Syracuse (Kelvin Smith and Tanard Jackson) and Rutgers (Brian Leonard, Clark Harris, Ramel Meekins, Darnell Stapleton and Cameron Stephenson) can also be considered as local guys, although they are not really small school prospects. Obviously, Leonard is a great fit as a person, but do they have room for him on the depth chart? Jackson is someone I think the Jets were linked with at one point.
Finally, two guys we discussed here already could also be considered as local guys, because they went to school in the area, namely Dwayne Jarrett and Greg Olsen.
If any of you have connections with these colleges – maybe you went there (Teufel?) – then please feel free to edit the rookiepedia profiles with any additional knowledge you may have.

Thanks Bent that was a good roundup. “Local” was not exactly what I meant so you hit it on the head with the smaller programs. Rutgers and Hofstra are the only local schools near NYC that seem to get regular attention from the NFL scouts. Sometimes there is the Stonybrook, Adelphi or C.W. Post player but NY is not the hotbed of football that Florida is.
I just saw that Rookiepedia.com, this cool site that I’ve heard of somewhere, has a link to the Kirwan “Sleepers” article on NFL.com among other great things. In the future I’ll say “sleepers” but thankfully Bent knew what I meant. Obviously Chrebet is a prime reason to roll the dice on a player from Hofstra; referring to the Jets Colston question of “why not?”

Since Zak’s dad (former Pat) is often on WEEI, we know ALL ABOUT Zak up here in Mass!!
