News: Veteran OTAs Continue

by Bassett on May 31st, 2007 at 3:55 pm

Here’s a quick rundown of the OTAs that started today. I will add more links as they show up in the RSS-O-Sphere:

The Updates

The Interesting Tidbits

  • Mangold wasn’t practicing … look for some stories about this. The sky isn’t falling yet though.
  • Adrien Clarke stood in for the absent Pete Kendall. Wade Smith started at center for Mangold. Watch out how this develops over the next few practices … will Jacob Bender or Adrian Jones get time with the first team?
  • Mangini didn’t bite on the Justin Miller story, just saying that it was an “internal” matter.
  • Mangini deflected concern over Brick’s weight by saying that he and Brick had been working together on that.
  • Mangini had (predictably) nothing but praise for McCareins. With Coles, Cotch, McCareins, Dwight, Brad Smith, Frisman Jackson, Wallace Wright and Chansi Stuckey, on the roster, in addition to some tryouts, camp could get interesting.
  • Brad Smith was returning kicks along with Revis … are the Jets anticipating a few game absence for Justin Miller?
  • David Harris was working with the second team.
  • Kellen Clemens struggled some, but at least he wasn’t yelled at by Schott.

I saw DBrick at a street fair in tribeca about a month ago, and I was struck by how small he looked (weight wise…i’m 6’4″ and i think i was up to his chin whan I walked by him). I haven’t been following, but has it been reported that he’s lost a lot of weight?

  2. avatar dave says:

and just to clarify, he mentioned nothing about the possibility of a vilma trade ;)

  3. avatar Bent says:

He was 315 at the combine but not probably nowhere close to that by the end of the year (he had been reportedly as low as 292 in his Senior year). I feel this will be a constant issue, but am more concerned over his development technically, because as a pass protecter, his long arms somewhat negate the need for substantial bulk.

I expect he will be able to add weight, but keeping it on during the season may be challenging, as it seemed to be last year.

Brick should’ve have put on 10-15 lbs of muscle weight, especially in his lower body. If he hasn’t, I’m questioning his off-season work habits.

ESPN’s Len Pasquarelli even commented in his tip sheet about D’Brick…

“New York Jets officials are still concerned about the inability of offensive tackle D’Brickashaw Ferguson to retain weight. The fourth overall choice in the 2006 draft (and a 16-game starter as a rookie) finished last season in the low 290s, and is struggling again to get his weight above 300 pounds.”

  6. avatar wayne says:

I am concerned about Bricks weight. Not too many top flight tackles playing under 300.

Also very interested to learn if DRob or Vilma have bulked up any.

  7. avatar RK says:

Maybe weight will be an issue early in his career but weight is gained as we age so I don’t think it will matter in the end.

Looks like Andruzzi was cut for a reason:

Correct me if I’m wrong, I’m not a doctor, but isn’t Non Hodgkins Lymphoma similar to what Mario Lemieux had? I know Lemieux had Hodgkins lymphoma, but I am under the impression the treatments for both are similar. If that’s the case, I can’t see Andruzzi playing much this year anywhere, let alone to sign with the Jets.

  9. avatar Bent says:

I think the two are quite different, but the treatment required depends how advanced it is.

That’s awful to hear. Hope he kicks its ass.

    “Hope he kicks its ass.”

I agree with you Bent. I failed to mention that in my post.
