Yesterday, Adam Schefter said on the NFL Network that he had information that Pete Kendall was going to put something of a show today in Hempstead, holding court with reporters and lambasting the Jets for their inaction in re-working his contract. Here is Schefter’s words on the matter.
The opinionated and outspoken Kendall isn’t planning to just burn a bridge. He is planning to napalm it. Kendall is furious that he reworked his contract with three years remaining on it for the Jets last year, but they won’t do the same for him this year … Not only did he want to avoid being fined for staying away, but he wants to share his pointed opinions about the way the Jets have handled his contract situation … Kendall plans to address this issue, and others, in the most heavily anticipated press conference at the Jets minicamp. The entire scene threatens to become similar to the one in Pittsburgh, where Faneca ripped the team that drafted him.
Clearly, we learned last year that Kendall can bring it in an interview with that deadpan one after the Jags loss. From what I hear, Herm is concerned his “play to win the game” presser might be relegated down the list by Kendall’s words today.

i have generally supported kendall in his effort to get more money. (he is way better than d’brick, and probably better than d’brick ever will be, but he gets paid way less.) people who say he is breaking a contract if he refuses to play don’t really understand the nature of contract law as it pertains to labor relations. if the team can fire him at any time, then he should be able to quit or demand a raise at any time. otherwise, there is probably not legal consideration and therefore no enforceable contract.
BUT…with all that said…if kendall thinks holding court in the locker room and complaining to the press will help him get a raise, he is plain crazy.

john abraham and mawae are bad comparisons. both were notably injury prone. especially abraham. it wasn’t only their talking that did them in.
-
My only point about Mawae and Abraham was that they each considered they would be better off elswhere and got their wish. I, for one, haven’t seen or heard much that changes my mind that the FO was right in letting them go.
-
Not surprised after all he’s from BOSTON.
-
only thing I can think of that is causing PK to freak out like this is that he is having flashbacks to 1978 when he was a little kid and quite unhappy that his beloved Sawx have pissed away 6 of their 14.5 games lead in 15 days.

bill: wasn’t abraham injured all of last year? he was having a monster season, but i remember he was knocked out after 4 games? Didn’t we get mangold with his pick from ATL??
-
Yeah, ironic isn’t it? The worry at the time for JA was that he never made it through a season injury-free!

Mawae is my all-time favorite Jets offensive lineman and IMO the best Center to ever play the game. And, when he opened his big mouth and complained about his contract situation (not agreeing to a pay cut) after coming off of a serious injury, I thought the Jets had to cut him. Jetsgrumbler, Mawae had 177 consecutive NFL starts, that’s an absolutely staggering figure and part of the reason why Mawae was a perennial Pro Bowler and a surefire HOF’er. Kendall is nowhere near as good and I am far less inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt. But, let’s not compare Mawae to Abraham. Mawae was a special player, team leader and ironman. Look at his influence on that young Titans team. Abraham, on the other hand, is a selfish jerk who never played hurt. His last season was emblematic of his career.

Certainly no thought on my part to compare the two to each other. Mawae was my favorite player as well. That line could block! CM thanked them every week!

anyone who considers mawae the best center of all time is automatically discredited as a football fan in my opinion. perhaps the most overrated of all time is a better moniker. sure, noone pulled outside and blew up 150 dbs like sam madison on a sweep better than kevin mawae (who just loved to celebrate such occassions). but when you talk about core responsibilities, like blocking a big NT such as ted washington or pat williams or sam adams, kevin mawae was avg at best and oftentimes was overmatched against NTs straight up.

Mawae was one of the best to don the Green and White! His numbers and pro-bowls speak for themself. If you read between the lines- I think jeff i’s comments are coming from a Fish Fan!
-
there’s no need to read between the lines bud. i’m stating a very simple case. mawae was mediocre at his core responsibility – blocking DTs. now if you want to make an argument he’s one of the best pulling centers of all time, i couldn’t argue that.

Jeff: you and i are watching different jet games. remember in 2004 when he played with that broken hand, using his cast as a club!? there’s a guy who gets the job done. A solid jet, maybe not THE BEST CENTER OF ALL TIME EVER, but don’t go discrediting the man!
Kendall, you are outstanding, get paid so you dont get played! The guy we got from the eagles is decent (he’s fing huge) kendall has a great presence on the field.
-
Back to the main issue- Kendall, let’s not forget he was a castoff of the Cardinals (not that they are great judge of talent) and the Jets gave him good money. He is getting up in years and his family is in Mass. he is a devoted family guy and probably doesn’t want to play on the west coast at this point in his career. In the end I feel he will be in the lineup come Sept vs the Pats.
-
Arguably, it was Mawae’s utter dominance of Ted Washington and virtually the entire AFC East’s DT’s in 1998 that began his yearly trips to Hawaii. I do not know what you were seeing jeff i, but what made Mawae exceptional was his versatility, he could pull like a guard while handling his core responsibilities. He’s a certain HOF’er, I just hope he wears his Jets jersey when he’s inducted.

9 in a row for NYY – only going to add to PK’s misery. IMO he is a goner – this regime is not going to stand for this nonsense. Is it fair? Is it right? Does not matter – when you decide you want to play in the NFL, you know that contracts are only valid if you make the team – if you do not like that, then do not become an NFL player.

You know, maybe if I was making 1.7 MILLION and thought I was worth 2.7 MILLION, I’d understand the outrage he feels. Me, I make much, much less and I still think a contract is a contract. Signing bonus would have made me a very happy man! I’d understand other teams overspending on guys. They may never see the money, getting cut first. Me, I got mine! In my business, I’d never burn my bridges, either. Mawae and Abraham come to mind. On the other hand, he hasn’t said anything publicly yet. Maybe he rethinks his position.
