NFLEL World Bowl XV Recap

Frankfurt Galaxy 28 Hamburg Sea Devils 37

In what is expected to be the last ever World League of American Football/NFL Europe/NFL Europa game, the Hamburg Sea Devils made Germany proud (and Frankfurt didn’t) as Hamburg escaped with a 37-28 win at the Commerzbank Arena.

So, Jets G Matt McChesney and NT Zarnell Fitch were unable to emulate the achievements of Charles Missant, Isaac Snell and James Taylor who won the title with Frankfurt last year.

McChesney, who earlier this week was named to the all-league team despite playing the second half of the season on a bum ankle, made the start for Frankfurt and was called for one holding penalty. Frankfurt also gave up 4 sacks, but did rack up 360 yards of offense.

Fitch, meanwhile, had a monster day with 5 tackles, including stuffing two runs for no gain and a four yard loss and one sack. One of his other tackles came as he pushed the receiver out of bounds on the 13 after a 26 yard pass play. Impressive mobility for a big man, it would seem.

Redskins QB Casey Bramlet was named MVP after he passed for 347yds and 4TDs, including two to 49ers wideout Marcus Maxwell, who caught 5 passes for 127yds. Bears QB J T O’Sullivan’s 299yds and 2TDs were not enough to win it for the Galaxy.

Ex-Jets PR Decori Birmingham ran for a 5yd TD for the Galaxy and had 7 carries for 26yds, 3 catches for 11yds and 7 kickoff returns for 172yds, including a 40yder. Fellow ex-Jets Charles Missant and Kevin Eakin (who did not play) also wound up on the losing side. Another ex-Jet (briefly) Pete McMahon, did come away with a championship ring.

So, as we wave goodbye to the league where everything’s made up and the points don’t matter, what next for the Jets? Maybe this will have no effect whatsoever, or maybe they will find another Brandon Moore or Alan Harper to make the team. Blake Costanzo and Jamie Thompson are reportedly already back in Hempstead and McChesney and Fitch will no doubt join them in a few days. They may even add a free agent like they did last year with Reggie Newhouse. If they do, you’ll read about it here, so watch this space…

  1. Thanks for the great coverage! Much appreciated! I am very curious to see how McChesney does during training camp on the offensive line.

  2. Bent, Kudos go to you for providing us with an indepth look at what could be an afterthought next year. Nonetheless, it is heartening to hear that McChesney and Fitch will be competing for roster spots after being so successful in Europe.
