In other cutdown news, it looks as if the Jaguars will part ways with QB Byron Leftwich, either via trade or pure release.
Many in Jetdom have clamored for a more experienced back-up to Chad Pennington. How do TJB readers feel? Is there room on the Jets roster for two former Marshall QBs?
The first axe has fallen, as according to NFL.com’s Adam Schefter, the Jets will be releasing defensive tackle Kimo von Oehloffen. (Last item on the page; thanks to Will for the link.)
KVO, a 13-year vet, started all 16 games last season for the Jets after being signed as a free agent from the Pittsburgh Steelers. More cuts as they’re announced.
It’s now time for the most anticipated event of the pre-season: TJB’s Annual Name-that-Squad Contest!
The rules are simple: name the players you feel will make the Jets active 53-man roster. The official deadline for announcing roster moves is tomorrow, but I suspect the efficient Tangini team will announce cuts today. They’ll act fast, so you’d better act fast. Get your entries in now!
The heavy lifting has been done for you. The current active roster, according to the Jets Web site, is listed after the jump. Cut and paste the roster in the “Comments” section and delete those you feel will get tapped on the shoulder today by the Turk. With creeping roster death lurking about Hofstra today, I suspect lamb’s blood is being sold by the gallon on
Enough with the Biblical references. Make your roster predictions ASAP and for $#@! and giggles, throw in your eight practice squad picks. They may be the tie-breaker in this contest.
Oh, you can’t have a contest without a prize and the grand prize for the most correct answers is…a hearty congratulations from TJB! Have fun and good luck!!
It’s hard to know who will be sandwiched between Brick and Nick come September 9th, so I am curious to know … who you think will be getting abused by Seymour, Wilfork and Warren in a true “baptism by fire?”
I don’t know why, but my money’s on Adrian Jones. Sure he might be valuable as a reserve tackle, but I think that it might be more about Clarke and Bender’s inability to hang with the talent level and it’s a hole that just needs to be filled, right now. Jones has played left and right tackle, so surely guard, the least athletic position on the line, is within his grasp, no?
The 2007 pre-season is now in the books. You read
- Cimini writes that Mosley and Tuiasosopo may have secured themselves roster spots with solid performances in the Backup Bowl. Cimini also notes that McCareins guaranteed himself a place on the team by renegotiating his contract. Hope he got that promise of a raise in writing!
- Mosely’s jarring sack of A.J. Feeley apparently broke the QB’s hand. With this development, Feeley needs some new Mitts. (Couldn’t help myself, fellas. Sorry!)
- Rock says Stuckey is a keeper. Duh!
- Jacob Bender dominant? So says Hutch at the Star-Leger. He played better, but “dominant” might be a stretch. The Jets PR department must have traded a favor to Hutch for this story.
- Hats off to Andrew Gross for being honest and admitting that he reviewed the game on TV like the rest of us. Gross also confirms the “Dangling Dyson” rumors.
The Jets closed out their preseason campaign with an 13-11 win over the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field. Despite being outgained, the Jets forced some turnovers to stay in the game and led 10-3 until the Eagles scored a TD and two point conversion with three minutes to go. However, Marques Tuiasosopo worked the two minute drill and Mike Nugent kicked a 35 yard field goal as time expired.
Of course, given that preseason is such a perfect indicator of regular season performance, we can now expect the 3-1 Jets to win 75% of their games and go 12-4 in the regular season.
More thoughts to follow tomorrow, but for now, some quick notes after the jump. Please note that I did not watch the game, so please feel free to contribute input of your own)… (more…)
No detailed thread required today. You all know the drill. Andy Reid won’t use any of his main guys and Eric Mangini will use the game as a tune-up for those who’ve missed time, as well as a last chance to evaluate the guys on the bubble.
I’ll be watching (well, listening) though…to chat, click the link below.
According to the Asbury Park Press, the New York Jets are using cornerback Andre Dyson as trade bait to replace departed guard Pete Kendall.
The Jets are said to be dangling cornerback Andre Dyson as trade bait as they try to acquire a veteran left guard to replace Pete Kendall. The 28-year-old Dyson started 15 games last season, but the Jets seem comfortable inserting Darrelle Revis at left cornerback despite the first-rounder missing 20 days of training camp as a holdout.
As the article notes, New York feels comfortable with Darrelle Revis after an impressive performance against the Giants and because of that Dyson becomes expendable.
Now the question becomes, who can the Jets get in exchange for the 28 year-old?

Time for the annual preseason Jets-Eagles matchup, which this year should be even less of a contest because the teams meet up in Week 6 of the regular season (Oct. 14) at the Meadowlands in a game that should extra confusing because the team in green on the field won’t be the Jets (they’ll be in their navy-and-gold Titan throwbacks that day).
That being said, TJB Scout is going light here today because it really is a battle of the back-ups, for the Iggles especially — Philly head coach Andy Reid never lets his starters play in the final preseason game. So make yourself a cheese steak and come on!
A few of you have sent me a link to Peter King’s rankings of his top 500 players in the NFL, though I can’t be sure what sort of scientific method was used to come up with these rankings, it’s fun all the same. Either way, here’s the rankings of Jets players who made it and my comments.
Keep in mind that with 32 rosters and 53 active players per roster come the regular season (1696 total players), even making this list is an accomplishment … denoting a player in the top third of the league. According to my bad math skills, if 500 plays is representative of 29% all 1696 players, than this means that each team should have on average 15.6 players … King lists 20 Jets players.
#29 — Kerry Rhodes: I predicted earlier this year the hypemachine would get rolling, but I didn’t foresee this. Rhodes had a great year in 2006, is athletic, smart, a hard-worker and has come a long way from when he was drafted, but this is a level of regard I didn’t expect. I just hope he’s ready for the level of scrutiny he’s going to receive now.
#107 — Chad Pennington: Well at least Kellen Clemens isn’t ranked ahead of him (yet). Might seem like a low mark, but he’s ranked 13th at his position, which probably isn’t an unfair judgement from a national reporter. We all know what Pennington is and isn’t, but that doesn’t mean that I would place my hopes in Jay Cutler over him to get to the playoffs in 2007.
#120 — Jonathan Vilma: We all know Vilma is a team guy, a smart solid player but that he’s more suited for a different defense. He might be chafing under the new system, but you wouldn’t know it from his mouth. Either way, this is a make or break year for Vilma … he’s got to be thinking about his next contract … typically the biggest payday for NFL players.
#145 — Nick Mangold: Playing Center as a rookie can be tough, but Mangold pulled it off while keeping his lustrous golden curls well conditioned. If that alone doesn’t get you in the top 200, I don’t know what else could.
The last time I was scheduled to cover for Bassett, I got sidetracked in Manhattan and Pete Kendall promptly got traded. Today, when I’m actually available, I go searching around the internet for anything of interest and come up nearly empty. I suppose that’s my punishment for “bailing” last time. Jets Blog Gods 1 – Dan Benton 0. Touché.
- It should come as no surprise that the Jets and ex-Raven guard Keyrick Vincent are currently “in talks.” New York is obviously looking for a replacement at guard and Vincent could be their man.
- Dave Hutchinson of the Star-Ledger lists five things to watch for tonight against the Philadelphia Eagles back-ups.
- The Jets met with former Patriots defensive back Antrell Hawkins this week. Hawkins started 16 of the 19 games played in New England, but was released on August 18th because of an undisclosed injury that prevented him from practicing.
- It’s been a hell of a preseason for back-up quarterback Kellen Clemens.
- 20 Jets make Peter King’s top 500 list.
As many of you are aware, TJB has started some fantasy football leagues. If you have never played fantasy football, this is an excellent opportunity to get your feet wet in a free league with absolute strangers so if you screw up, your buddies won’t know and won’t be ragging on you for years.
Of course, we here at TJB are always trying to spread our knowledge with the other fans out there, so I thought I’d post some helpful tips here (I originally had posted these on my own blog a few days ago). As I head off to my own league’s Draftmas tonight, here are a few things that the first-time fantasy football player should know.
1. You only draft players who handle the ball—quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers, tight ends and kickers—and have the potential to score. Along those lines, Tom Brady hooking up with Gisele Bundchen and Bridget Moynihan, or Tony Romo completing a pass on Carrie Underwood, or Reggie Bush getting in Kim Kardashian’s endzone, are all considered great “scores,” but you only get points for your player’s actions on the field of play. During the game.
