Breaking News: Darrelle Revis is “Gruntled”

by Bent on August 16th, 2007 at 3:08 am

Obviously, it was only a matter of time, but the Jets last night finally signed first round draft pick CB Darrelle Revis to a six year contract.

Welcome to the Jets, Darrelle, and – as E.T. once said – “Be Good”.

“A marathon Tuesday night session that included intense negotiations, and a little noshing, finally concluded in a Wednesday evening agreement between the New York Jets and first-round draft choice Darrelle Revis.” – I know the negotiations were long winded but I hope they are referring to the cheesecake…

47 pages long? That’s almost as bad as the Redskins playbook.

No need to panic. Mr. T always gets his man. “I pity the fool who thought Revis would sit out the season.”

No one will remember the holdout a couple of years from now when Revis is all pro and signed for a sixth year, mark my words.

    Excellent job Mr. T.

A side note, think they used the extra cap space to accomplish this, good job, no use wasting it.

    From admitted Jet hater Peter King’s “All Future Team” rundown;

CB | Darrelle Revis | New York Jets
The Cleveland Browns thought enough of him to have him ranked as a top-five player in the draft this year — and the Jets thanked their lucky stars Revis was still there at No. 14. He’s got excellent cover skills and is a willing tackler.

NFL Network is reporting the deal is for $36Million over six years. BUT, it has a player void option after only 4 years, with an expensive club “buy back” option, so it is really an escalator clause.

No word yet on guaranteed money, Carriker got 8+ Million for his five year deal, guessing Revis got more.

A Holdout is never a good thing, but in this case it might have have helped the team that the Vets got a lot of Reps and could step their game up to ward off the highly touted rookie. Bottom line: our team just got better.

Who is this “Darrell” guy? I read the site all the time and never heard of him, is he any good?

  8. avatar Good, but Not Great says:

Good to have the kid in camp. Rookie CBs are targets, but it sounds like the kid has the tools to develop into a good one over time. Love the move to trade up and take him.

BUT if the Jets don’t improve their run defense, opposing teams may not need to throw against them. Hope the 1st team defense looks better than they did last week against Atlanta.

Seems they gave up the right to use the Franchise tag on him as part of this deal, so now downgrading my opinion from great to good.

He is locked up for the sixth year, essentially franchised already without using the tag. This lets them use the tag on another player so it is a good thing, but not as good as him being signed straight and away for Y6 and having the option to franchise him in Y7.

They essentially guaranteed him $3 million extra now in exchange for him letting them franchise him for Y6 after Y4, without it counting as the use of a franchise tag. Creative thinking, but not a straight away win.

Wonder if the league and/or union may challenge this clause?

The deal wasn’t announced until the contract had been approved by the NFL, so the answer to your question must be no.

Does this mean Justin Miller will not be covering any receivers this year?

    I’m glad nothing’s changed.
