Monday morning links

by Bundgaard on August 27th, 2007 at 6:14 am

There’s plenty of talk about the struggling Jets O-line this morning: Steve Serby in the Post, Hutchinson in the Star-Ledger, Tom Rock on Newsday.com, J.P Losman….sorry, Pelzman on NorthJersey.com… oh, and Tom Rock has gotten his fingers on a job advertisement from Tannenbaums office.

This is an old one, but Bucky Brooks from SI.com thinks Clemens is the next Schaub.

A site called Jet Kingdom (it’s the old WestSideJets.com) has started to podcast about the Jets

Our old friend Brooks Bollinger is having problems holding on to the backup job in Minnesota

I have been tackled in the backfield by some vicious flu (…or something), so I’ll probably stay in bed all day but I’ll try to be back later.

A couple of new names have surfaced as potential Kendall-Bender-Clarke replacements at the guard spot. Last night Adam Schein reported on SNY’s Jets Nation that Detroit’s Damien Woody could be available. The Lions signed guard Edwin Mulitalo in the offseason and they have a lot of depth behind him with Frank Davis, Ben Koll and rookie Manuel Ramirez. Woody seems to be expendable at this point and has some history with Mangini having played for the Patriots in the past. Woody, a 9 year vet, won Superbowls in 01 & 03 with New England and went to the Pro-Bowl in 02. Also in the Daily News Cimini has a similar report that JP Peltzman of the Record had last week, about the Ravens and there surplus of guards. Those names included veterans Keydrick Vincent and Brian Rimpf, none of these names are going to blow you away, but at this point I think anyone would be an upgrade.

Woody has some experience at center, too, I believe. Remember, there is no legit back up center on this roster.

Just to temper the Revis enthusiasm, let us please remember that the Giants and Eli were on the other side.

While I liked what I saw and loved the pick, lets not make reservations in Canton until he stops a real offense in the regular season. He will have his chance week one.

Does anyone but me thing it may make sense to play the starting offense togethar this week, at least for a few series? Especially if they sign a new starting guard this week.

NFL.com, and other wire reports, indicate Kendall was traded for a 2008 4th round pick.

Is it possible the local media is incorrect?

  6. avatar Ferragamo says:

Wayne from what I understood it was a conditional pick, based on Kendall’s playing time with the Skins this year. I think if Kendall plays in over 80% of the snaps in 2007 for Washington the pick turns into a 4th rounder in 2009, if he doesn’t meet those requirements the pick remains a 5th rounder in 2008. I beleive the Skins already lost there 4th round pick in 2008 in another deal.

I wonder why there’s been no discussion of flipping Brandon Moore over to the left side — Pennington’s blind side — and inserting a more inexperienced guard on the right. Anyone?

  8. avatar Bent says:

I don’t think Moore has ever played LG before (remember, he’s a converted DT). Also, it makes sense to keep the right side intact if the left side is in flux.

Just caught Mangini’s press conference. Bunch of roster moves announced, most notably Tim Dwight is a goner, along with one of my camp favorites Juan Wong. Most of the other guys were practice squad or UDFA’s guys like Dante Ridgeway, Darrel Adams and Zarnell Fitch.

  10. avatar Bent says:

Wasn’t there some rule about NFLEL players having their roster space protected and not counting towards the limit until final cutdown day?

If that’s the case, they really must have no interest in Wong or Fitch, even for PS purposes.

No surprises there, by the sounds of it. Most of those guys weren’t seeing the field.

  11. avatar Ferragamo says:

Bent that’s a great question, I thought I remebered some type of rule like that, but I’m not 100% sure.
Wong was strictly a return man, with Revis, Miller and B.Smith it would be hard to find a spot for him. I think Dwight was having a hard time recovering from last years injury, Mangini made it sound like it was a very hard decision.

With the end of NFLEL, the roster exception might have changed.
