Final: Jets 13 Eagles 11

by Bent on August 30th, 2007 at 10:54 pm

The Jets closed out their preseason campaign with an 13-11 win over the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field. Despite being outgained, the Jets forced some turnovers to stay in the game and led 10-3 until the Eagles scored a TD and two point conversion with three minutes to go. However, Marques Tuiasosopo worked the two minute drill and Mike Nugent kicked a 35 yard field goal as time expired.

Of course, given that preseason is such a perfect indicator of regular season performance, we can now expect the 3-1 Jets to win 75% of their games and go 12-4 in the regular season.

More thoughts to follow tomorrow, but for now, some quick notes after the jump. Please note that I did not watch the game, so please feel free to contribute input of your own)…
* QB: Pennington did not play, as expected. Clemens played the first couple of series and completed a couple of short passes. Smith came on in the first half and struggled to move the team, as he lost a fumble on a sack. He recovered to complete a deep ball, setting up a field goal in the second quarter, but generally looked better scrambling than throwing. Tuiasosopo started the second half and after struggling to move the team, was efficient on a TD drive, which he finished off himself with an 11 yard run on a QB draw on the first play of the fourth quarter. He was under a lot of pressure with the third string offensive line in front of him, but moved the team into range on the last drive. Brett Ratliff did not play all preseason.
* RB: Jones did not play again and neither did Washington. Ware got the start and saw action in the third quarter. Once again, he made a slow start, but did better in the second half. Banks and Hollings did not play.
* FB: Barnes started and was still in at the end, making a crunching lead block. Tutt came in late in the first quarter and even carried the ball several times as the featured tailback for most of the first half, doing a pretty good job. He picked up more yards than Ware and displayed power between the tackles.
* TE: Baker was rested, as Sean Ryan got the start. Kowalewski had some short catches early on but had a key catch overturned on the last drive. Ryan had a 15 yard taunting penalty to stall a drive in Eagles territory. Pociask had one short catch in the fourth.
* WR: Coles, McCareins and Cotchery were all rested as Wright and Stuckey got to start. Wright was active on special teams again. Jackson had three catches, including a deep ball from Smith to set up a field goal. Stuckey had a 38 yard punt return as the Eagles outkicked their coverage and some good kickoff returns. He also had a third down conversion in the red zone and three big first downs on the last drive. Davis had a bad drop. Prall almost made a great catch on the last drive.
* OL: Bender started, sensibly, alongside the second unit and apparently did OK, especially in the running game, albeit against second teamers. Jones was beaten for the only sack of the first half (by Adrian Murrell’s brother, who had another strip sack in the third) for a first half turnover. Clarke didn’t help his cause with a false start. Bender also had one (on 3rd and one) late in the first half. Goddard was beaten for a sack in the third.
* ST: Graham had an adventure with one snap, but still got the kick off and later launched a 61-yarder inside the five and a 55-yarder inside the ten. Nugent gave the Jets the lead with a 48 yard field goal and won it late. He kicked off well again. Meanwhile, the Eagles missed two FGs, meaning that 5 of 6 had been missed over the last two games. Damn…who’s our goalie?
* DL: The starters were rested, giving Pouha a chance to start at nose tackle, but it was C J Mosley who made the biggest impact with 3 sacks (and two forced fumbles) on one first half drive. Hamilton made three solo tackles in the first half. Mike Devito made a bid with a fourth quarter sack.
* LBs: With the starters rested, Harris played a bit too much for some people’s liking, but survived unscathed and again looked good, with consistent and secure tackling. Bowens recovered a fumble. Kassell broke up a pass and was active in the first half. Schlegel (just like last year) made several plays in the second half, including a tackle for a loss on a WR screen and a forced fumble. Wadsworth first saw action late in the third and got in on a few tackles in the fourth.
* DBs: Manny Collins saw plenty of action and was beaten for a TD, but it was called back for offensive pass interference. He nearly intercepted a pass in the third. Revis got some early reps and returned one punt. Poteat was beaten for a 39 yard gain. Ventrone started and saw plenty of action, making an impact on special teams and with his hitting on defense. Drew Coleman recovered a fumble in the third quarter and tackled well in the second half, but was beaten for what was almost the winning TD. Jamie Thompson stuffed a 3rd and short play late in the fourth.

That’s all I’ve got…anything I missed/misinterpreted, please comment below.

I missed most of the game.
Did Bender play most of the game at LG?
    Who was returning kickoffs?
How did Pouha look at NT?
How did W. Smith look at Center?

Looks like Brad Smith had all the drives in the 2nd quarter.
