The Bubble Bursts
The Jets finally announced who they cut today and now have their roster down to 53. Drack now has the unenviable task of calculating who won the picks contest. Good luck, buddy!
As for the names, there were one or two surprises. Danny Ware was cut, leaving the Jets thin at running back, but I guess Tutt and Smith could play there at a pinch and also, this either means that Jones must be good to go, or the Jets are going run and shoot! Also, Mike DeVito from Maine made the team, along with fellow bubble guys Spencer, Kassell, Hicks, Poteat and Tuiasosopo. Oh, and all six wideouts made it, as expected. Guys that didn’t make it also included Ventrone, Schlegel, Haynes, Hamilton, Wadsworth and “Rafliff”, according to Cimini’s blog (linked above).
The story doesn’t end here, though. As Jason Nerys will tell you, surviving the last round of cuts doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be on the opening day roster, as the Jets usually look to pick guys up off waivers, if only to add to the practice squad (which is yet to be announced).
Also, as I predicted earlier, Rich Cimini admitted his error with the misunderstanding over the Belichick quote. So Bill *would* have Kerry on his team…let’s hope he never has that option.
More reaction to follow from the rest of the team…

He also lists “Rafliff” as a WR. I guess Cimini is right — he needs to be put on waivers if this is how he does his job, with erroneous quotes and general misinformation.
Hopefully, Ware and Ventrone will end up on the practice squad.
And have we seen a purge of the “Hold the Fort” guys — Hamilton, KVO, etc. — and an infusion of youth (DeVito, Mosley) on the d-line?
I also saw that Vinny from Elmont got cut by the Pats today. Is he finally done?
Biggest news of the day is Richard Seymour’s injury. He’s missing the first 6 weeks of the season. I don’t know who prayed harder, Brick, Bender or Mangini, but those prayers were answered. I know the Pats are great and BB is a magician, but losing Harrison and Seymour has to weaken that defense.
You’re right SD. I was thrilled to see that the big DE Seymour was out. That certainly helps us for next Sunday. I would say that our front 7 has marginally improved from last year’s roster, but we’ll see how it pans out on the field. No more Highway 67!
I think that you can expect a waiver signing of a 3rd RB. Although solid in preseason, Ware is a rookie and I imagine Mangini would be more comfortable with a proven veteran (Ciatrick Fason anybody?). As for the TEs and DBs, after scanning waivers I expect the Jets will sign a 3-4 DE, as Hicks is the only solid back-up option, and perhaps look for a G although that is not a certainty. Afterwhich, one of the TEs or DBs will be released.
I’ve been looking at the cut lists for o-linemen that might be of use to the jets, and I don’t see many options:
Kenyatta Walker (cut by panthers) – this guy was a 1st round draft pick, and while he clearly isn’t a starting tackle in the nfl, perhaps he can move to guard?
Kevin Boothe (cut by raiders) – he was a rookie last year who started for most of the season, and did okay. he was cut because the raiders don’t think he can perform in a zone blocking scheme they are implementing.
Brian Rimpf (Ravens) – played extensively in 2005 – could be a decent stopgap until bender is (hopefully) ready later in the year.
as a side note, the saints cut former OSU RB Antonio Pittman
I wouldve liked to see how this line stood up against their front 3. yea, it’s quite a “break” that seymour’s out, but i think its the wrong attitude to get all giddy about it. the real test of a team isn’t going to come against a def with injuries and suspensions…
notwithstanidng hope our guys take advantage of the misfortune…otherise i wont hear then end of it from pats buddies how they “took it to us without harrison AND seymour!”
I’m going to the game sunday. scored ticks in the 5th row on the 20 yrd line next to Fireman Ed. To say i’m midly excited would be an understatement worthy of a felony in these parts.
I think both NE & Balt are overrated. Losing 2 tight ones and starting 0-2 is no moral victory – it is 0-2. I truly believe week 1 seys tone for season. If NE wins, Balt is almost a must game.
