Kellen Clemens on His First Start
Posted on September 17th, 2007 by Bassett
Kellen Clemens on the fourth quarter and his comfort level with the game.
I think offensively the fourth quarter was out best quarter. We needed to score, and we needed to score quick. Jericho had two big receptions, and we moved the football and got back in the game … As the game grew on, I got more and more comfortable. My play in the first half was not what it should have been. And by the second half, things slowed down a little bit and I calmed down, and we were able to move the football.

Man, regarding Mr. Clemens, the first three quarters of that game were akin to the first 10 minutes of Saving Private Ryan. Only thing that was missing was a shot of Clemens wondering around looking for his arm.
That pass that bounced to Coles, Chad woudlnt have missed it. Chad is and remains #1.
At least the offensive line got a little attitude toward the end of the 3rd quarter, but we cannot forget that this is, and will always be our beloved heartbreaking team.
Actually, Jay, I was expecting to tie the game and then have our hearts broken in OT. Maybe this is progress!
Wormfather–Chad is a good QB, but he couldn’t have thrown that ball to Coles in the end zone. That was well beyond the distance chad can throw. Really, can you recall him throwing a ball on a line without loft that travelled more than 20 yards? Right now, Chad is probably a more consistent QB and better decision maker, but there is no question that Clemens has more potential.
Take my word for it, Kellen Clemens is the balls.
I’m a bit surprised people aren’t more excited about Clemens’ fourth quarter. Problems with accuracy? Did you see some of the throws he made yesterday? the touchdown to Baker, Coles’ catch where he got pushed out of bounds, the big passes to Cotchery in the middle of the field- all of those throws could not have been placed any better, and with the exception of the Baker TD they were all rifled down field and were throws Chad would probably not be able to make.
I saw the Qb of the future – the immediate future – yesterday afternoon. Yes, he had a rough first half and yes the Ravens backed off some pressure on the first 4th quarter (but did bring a variety of blitzes later in the quarter especially on the last drive)- but Clemens in his first start played an outstanding 4th quarter on the road against arguably the best defense in the NFL. Period. What more could anyone possibly have expected?
Thing I like best about this guy (aside from the arm) is his guts. He’s a bit of a gun slinger and at times it will no doubt leave us wringing our hands, but hes got the proverbial balls to take a chance and make the big play.
Was it just me, or did it seem that Ravens receivers were a lot more open than Jets receivers? Whoile I think our OL has been putrid, that can’t be blamed on them. Watching hte Patriots last night, same thing. They seemed to have at least one receiver wide open on every play.
To me, that comes down to coaching – designing good plays and calling them at times when they will work. The Pats jsut seems to ahve a temendous knack for calling hte right play/defense at the right time. And that’s all coaching (perhaps with a little help from outside sources ;-)
McCariens should be released or traded for some help on the o-line….He’s horrible. I’m looking forward to Kellems but Pennington is still the man for the job…we should be prepared for 3 straight wins before the bye week.
One more thought – let’s be kind to Chad. While Clemens showed potential, the Jet’s record when Chad starts is pretty good. I’m happy having two quarterbacks we can rely on. QB is WAY down the list in terms of the Jet’s problems. Ranking them, you’d have to say:
1) Zero pass rush
2) No beef on OL to start a running game. Big reason for the sacks is that teams don’t fear the run, and just pin their ears back. I admit it’s jealousy, but after watching the Pats’ OL manhandle the Chargers last nigh, I can’t help but wonder why we can’t get the same type of OL?
3) DB’s have not been good. Kerry Rhodes is playing like he’s still on the set, and David Barrett has a future playing “The Torch” on Survivor. Revis is exciting, but he’s just 1 of 11.
4) No beef on DL to stop the run. Why do we never, never, get the Ted Washingtons or Jamal Williamses?
5) Our defense has NO playmakers at the present time. Just a bunch of bend-but-don’t-break guys “catching” blocks all over the field.
6) No deep threat at WR. Justin McCarreins is NOT the answer. This has been an issue for some time.
I think GlockNSoul’s comment was the most on the level. I’m gonna add number 7 to the list.
7. When did we close the offensive playbook, last year there was so much going on on the offensive side, this year it’s like watching a highschool team with maybe 10 plays.
I did not expect to start 0-2. We would have won yesterday if Chad started. I am excited that we have a back-up QB who can step in play if Chad gets hurt again. I am not looking forward to hearing the dummies boo every time Chad throws an incomplete.
Jets gave up 3.5 yards per carry yesterday, after allowing 3.6 in the opener. Last year I know it was at least 4.6.
Problem is not the run defense right now, it is the pass defense.
No pass rush, zero sacks in two weeks despite a fair amount of blitzing.
And we cover no one, Revis is the only guy ever in the picture. Its not just the corners either, even the running backs are WIDE open. No one was near McGahee on his catch.
Obviously these two items are related, not sure of the cause and effect except to say they need to get it right.
Why is no one mentioning the call at the end of the half.
It was ruled a non-catch on the field, and I did not believe there was conclusive evidence required to over turn the call.
While he did drag his foot it was not clear to me that he had possession at the time of the foot drag. He was still pulling it in with one arm.
Granted I had a few beers in me, but did anyone see it the way I did?
The ref, in his review summary, only seemed to address the question of the receivers feet being in bounds and not the question of possession, which, I agree, was the aspect of the catch that the TV replay did not provide enough evidence of for overturning the call on the field.
Thanks md, at least deserves discussion.
Now for the good news.
As of tomorrow the Jets remaining opponents are off to a terrific 11-17 start, .393 winning percentage.
So much for the tough schedule :o)
Wayne – not only was the call at the end of the half very suspect, but how about the non-PI call on Coles in the 1st quarter on the interception?
Yes, I am an unashamed Pats fan. I also watched your Jets play the ravenous Ravens.
Frankly, your “stand in” quarterback, Clemens, looked pretty dang good. It pains me to say this, but your Mangini called the right plays down the stretch. You guys had two sure TDs, to tie the game. But your #81 needs to go back to the farm league. If he was a Patriot, even in last year with the very lean receiving core, he would not have been given a second chance. I feel for you guys. Seeing two beautiful passes slide right through his teflon hands even caused me to grown! And I don’t like your team!
Hey, get rid of that bozo #81, and give Clemens guys who are serious about their sport, and you guys will climb right back into this season!
Peace!
I’m still not convinced on Clemens. He’s 19/37 for 260 yards and 2 interceptions in yesterday’s game. And not saying Chad would have put up more because it’s impossible to say…
…but oh the heck with it. Chad would have put up more.
The only reason we were able to keep it close is because the Ravens were penalized for a ba-zillion yards.
And I agree McCairens needs to have some ‘bench time’.
Wayne — I thought the same thing. I thought there were a few “homer” calls by the refs, but to their credit, they saw it the same way on the Baker and Coles calls, so I guess it was a wash. Definitely didn’t think it was a TD — yes, his feet were in, but the ball was moving around. The refs on the field — both who were right there watching it — both called it the same without hesitation. That it got overturned despite “indisputable evidence” was clearly due to the home crowd.
Speaking of “homer” calls — anyone else notice how Welker was allowed to clearly spike the ball after a catch last night in the Pats game and the refs looked the other way? Things like that makes it hard to believe that there isn’t a bias in favor of them . . .
I was very impressed with Kellen yesterday. His two picks came on a play where Coles fell (or was interfered with) and on a ball that was pretty well thrown to McCariens (over the LB and under the defensive backfield), but McCariens couldn’t haul it in. My biggest issue was that he held the ball too long a few times, but he didn’t make any obviously bad decisions and he didn’t fumble the ball while getting pelted by defenders multiple times.
I thought he missed two throws, the one to McCariens in the first quarter when McCariens had his guy beat – and the one to Coles on the last drive, although that one wasn’t as bad.
I love Chad and I think he should be the starter, but I thought Kellen played very well and will eventually get a crack either this year (if Chad gets hurt) or next.
Although by no means is KC near Chad, I gotta give him props for his instincts. The most impressive play I found was the one in which he was getting blind sided blitz and he had the instincts to tuck the ball in within the last microseconds. That was a sure fumble(Remember Vinny).
Only someone with good instincts can feel that defender running down ur back.
IMO, KC had a great debut. He showed great pocket poise, mobility, a quick release and a plus arm. All the downside I attribute to the fact that this was his first NFL start, on the road, at a tough place to win on the road and against a defense that takes away the run and was hell-bent on blitzing a rookie QB. Sure, he held onto the ball too long a couple of times and the Coles pass wasn’t all that great. But, the two McCareins drops were terrible. He put the Jets in a position to possibly win the game and had a great 4th quarter. Chad has a raging bonfire lit under him now. That’s a good thing because I believe in Chad. I will say this much. If Chad proves ineffective or if the Jets go south, KC should be handed the reins because we have a stud and we have to give him time to develop in the show, not at practice.
kellen definitely played well in the 2nd half yesterday. But if we are going to get on McCariens for dropping that TD pass, we need to be equally as hard on kellen for shorthoping another TD pass to coles on the left side of the endzone. I know its his first start, but that was just as big an opportunity as any to tie the game.
