News: Billick Accuses Jets of Cheating

It’s Mangini’s turn! Yay! Now the slobbering Pats and Ravens fans can descend on my blog, and leave comments I’ll delete!!

Don’t expect to see self-loathing hand-wringing and contrition around here about my poor poor team, you won’t find it. Am I shocked that Mangini would do such a thing? Hardly, he learned at the knee of one of the greatest cheaters of all time! With two linemen out of place in Adam Terry and Marshall Yanda, this would seem to fit.

First things first though, show me the rule book, and then we can go from there. So far, I haven’t seen the rule Billick says is cheating in the press. That’s not to say I don’t think there is a rule … there likely is and should be. I’m just not going to get too worked up about this until I see it.  If the Jets did it, the NFL should launch an investigation and determine guilt.  If they really did it and it was against a rule in the book, then punish them accordingly, it’s as simple as that.  There’s no need to get all emotional and feel sorry for oneself like pretty much every Patriots fans did last week.  Get over yourselves, it’s football.

Is it Mangini’s time to face the wrath of the entire sporting media? Oh wait, he’s not a total knobjob like that dude in New England. Speaking of, check out these sweet shirts. You might want to get yourself one.

Either way, Billick has accused the Jets of calling out the Ravens snap count. Basically the Ravens contend that the Jets defenders tried to simulate the snap count by shouting out signals to throw off the Baltimore offense, and get them into false starts and such. Billick claimed the tactic led to the three illegal procedure penalties against the Ravens.

This quote from Brian Billick:

“They did an outstanding job. I credit the New York Jets. Their defensive line and linebackers did a very, very effective job of illegally simulating the snap count. They did it the whole game long. It needs to be caught. That’s not an excuse by any stretch of the imagination. But it is illegal. Our guys have to deal with it. I don’t know how to help my linemen with that because, you’re in the heat of battle and you’re calling the snap count, and the guy across from you is also calling a snap count — which is illegal.”

“You have to look at the nature of the penalties. First off, the fact that we had 11 penalties and they only had two and we dominated the game. I have a hard time understanding that the team that was playing so well and dominating had so many penalties and the other team had only two.”

I don’t think just because one team was penalized and the other wasn’t is a great logical reason, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the Jets did in fact do this. We’ll see how this progresses with the league office, if at all.

  1. I believe it is against the rules, BUT it’s against the rules in the way that holding or pass interference is. If the refs catch you then there is a penalty on the field. If not, then it’s the same as if you held and no one caught you.

  2. Adam beat me to it. Billick’s gripe should be with the refs, or with his own team for not turning to the refs and saying “hey, isn’t that illegal?” I agree a penalty should have been called for dong this if it in fact it was done. Then again, if it was being done and the Ravens asked the refs to watch it and it still wasn’t called, then a) it was not so blatant and disruptive as Billick implies or b) what reason would the Jets have had to have stopped it.

I’m hoping this will blow over quickly, and I think it will.

I’m actually more concerned that this is the “rat” sentiment amongst other coaches surfacing for the first of what could be many times.

  3. Talk about sour grapes, you won the game Billick, if what you are claiming the Jets were doing was so effective why did our defense look so bad all day and why didn’t one ref call it. Billick’s probably more upset because his stupidity nearly cost the Ravens the game.

  4. It may very well be against the rules but watching ESPN in the morning Tom Jackson was displaying how what the Patriots did to the Jets was an advantage and he before getting into that he displayed a situation of what he called “Gamesmanship,” and it was this EXACT thing. Jaws was doing a count on that stupid virtual field and he shouted out a count as well. I agree with everyone if there is a rule it is a rule that a flag has to be thrown, not a Spying act where you create a Library of everyones Defensive Signals

  5. 11 penalties is an indication of a bad coached team, not an opponent cheating. Billick is indicting himself with comments like that.

Agree if it is a rule it needs to be enforced, but on the field by the refs with a penalty. If it truly was happening on the field, he should have informed the refs at the time.

Yes, the Rat Factor will be obvious from here on out.

Just hope we are clean and don’t get a lesson about throwing stones in glass houses.

  6. There obviously won’t be any punishment for this and I don’t even think there will be a formal complaint, which in itself means this is not as serious.

It’s just like a pick play or an illegal cut block. Or a basketball player taking a flop. But I’m sure Pats fans would see this as justifying the act, just like many of them were, so maybe I can’t have any opinion without being biased.

  7. “I have a hard time understanding that the team that was playing so well and dominating had so many penalties and the other team had only two.”

I guess he didn’t watch the fourth quarter in which his “dominating” team that was “playing so well,” nearly blew the game to a visiting 0-1 team starting a backup quarterback. If I were Billick I’d try to whine less and focus more on the poor play calls and execution by his team with the game on the line.

  8. Hut, Hut……..Hut..Hut, Hut

  9. Screw Billick. 2 biggest plays of the game were early on where Coles was intefered with and Refs did not throw flag – that field position changed whole complexion of game. Then, we once again get hised by Refs on the Heap TD – YOU CANNOT REVERSE THAT CALL IF IT WAS NOT RULED A CATCH IN THE FIRST PLACE!!

  10. Hmmm, how about historicly over the past decade the Jets are one of the LEAST penilized teams in the league.

    (Pause…off to fact check… http://www.profootballweekly.com/PFW/NFL+Statistics/Team+Rankings/2005/finalrank.htm?FRAMELESS=true&NRNODEGUID=%7b3F58890E-F08B-46E8-9156-13A8808D47FD%7d&rank=&subRank=misc)

If it’s so dificult for your guys why not use a silent count?

  11. @wayne, not only is he indicting himself, he’s proving to be a horrible leader, you can preface it however you want but it’s an excuse. Penalties are reflectioin of discipline…or lack there of. The Jets may not be talented, but damnit if we’re going backwards, you’ll have to tackle us in the backfield…which hasnt proven to be that dificult so far.

  12. Billick is just retaliating for Mangini calling out Belichek’s little spy shop. It’s petty, and it’s probably going to continue quite a bit this season – Belichek no doubt has lots of supporters among the coaching ranks, and they’ll be looking to embarass Mangini and the Jets as often as possible now.

Might have well get used to the bullseye on our backs….

  13. Wormfather, after looking at your link, not only are the Jets one of the least penalized teams in the league since 2003, but the Ravens are one of the most penalized over the same stretch. They averaged between 26th and 32nd in penalties except for 2003 when they were 19th in the league. Billick needs to study more game film and get his team better prepared so they don’t commit penalties instead of wasting time with excuses.

  14. Newsflash: Billick wants all “Caddyshack” videos and dvd’s recalled so the Caddie Tournament scene can be recut by having Tony D’Annunzio’s supporters not heckle Danny Noonan on the 18th hole putting green by shouting “Noonan” because it’s illegal and against golf’s rules.

  15. Its kind of like the difference between A-Rod yelling “a-ha” at the fielder catching a pop-up while rounding third vs. using the center field camera view on the clubhouse tv to steal the catcher’s signs and relay them to the hitter. Gamemanship and poor sportmanship vs. outright cheating.

  16. Haha Andrew, that A-Rod debauchle was vs. The Blue Jays in Toronto and I was at that game. Actually, A-Rod said “I got it!” as he ran by.
