Cotchery Praises Giants’ Coverage

Andrew Gross got some good quotes from Cotchery on how the Giants’ played.

“That got lost in the shuffle because they did a great job of rushing the passer. No doubt, a lot of times those guys had some great coverage. A lot of times (Donovan) McNabb, he was dropping back, he was looking for his guy, waiting for his guy to get open and as soon as he’d come back and read someone else, he’d get sacked. Those guys had some great coverage if you really watch it … If you’re a receiver, you thrive for one-on-one coverage. That increases your chances of getting open. With the way they’re playing now, I’m expecting them to do what they do. I don’t expect them to look at any particular guys and switch it up … If you don’t get open, the quarterback is going to have a long day.”

Cotchery is right, there was a lot of contact at the line of scrimmage, which basically works to mask any problems of the secondary if you are blitzing often. Coles & Cotch could have big days, if they can fight off the contact, or Pennington help out by putting the ball in the air while they are engaged with defenders (for pass interference penalties).

  1. If we continue to conceptualize the Jets offense as Pennington to Coles and then occasionally to Cotchery,we’re never going to develop into a playoff team. What is the point of having Mr.Thomas Jones,Mr.Darian Barnes, and Mr.Jacob Bender,if we are not going to run the ball in between the tackles.Further Mr.Leon Washington and Mr Chris Baker are continuing to be wasted, when so clearly they have something to contribute. As Wonderful as Mr.Pennington and Mr.Coles are, isn’t it time to disabuse ourselves of the notion that winning hangs on this?
