Final Score: Giants 35 Jets 24

Mangini has preached it all season, consistency in every play and in every quarter. It’s hard to imagine a team that had ten points off turnovers and a kick returned for touchdown still lost by ten points, but it did.

Hats Off to the Line, But It Wasn’t Just Them – For all the durm und strang about the Giants’ rush happy defense, D’Brickashaw Ferguson and his linemates acquitted themselves well. The Jets did a good job of neutralizing the blitz though through screens, hurry up plays, and the the like. All the same, the line did play well. Next stop for Ferguson, run blocking.

The Breaks – Coles’ dropped pass that would have set up a touchdown late in the game was a killer, as was Nugent’s missed field goal in the first half. The most demoralizing single play was the Plaxico Burress touchdown, where he manhandled Andre Dyson like a ragdoll though.

Where Do We Go Now? – First off, I like Pennington, and he’s not the only, or even the biggest problem on this team, but like it or not, public sentiment is shifting away from #10. In all accounts Pennington moved the ball well for most of the game but looking at the numbers, he was 21 for 36 for 226 with 1 TD and 3 INT. Those interceptions were terrible, with the worst being the jump shot off one foot into the endzone. One of Pennington’s biggest strengths early in his career was his ability to avoid bad passes, but the lost velocity of his throws is showing, and his decisionmaking is getting frayed at the edges. If you are going to have a guy throw three picks in a loss … why wouldn’t you let a fledgling QB do the same thing? There’s a whole game of politics here, so it will be interesting to see if Mangini has the stomach (ha ha) to make a midseason switch.

Run Defense, Run Defense, Run Defense – It’s official. I am sick of talking about this team’s run defense. I have been talking about it going on three years now and nothing’s changed over that time. The team still stinks, key pieces haven’t been addressed, and I keep thinking they’re just a piece or two away from getting much better. During most of the first half, the Jets kept the Giants’ running game under wraps, but towards the half, the Giants started clicking. The Jets got *worked* on the run by two physical backs and gave up almost 200 yards on the ground. This team has trouble tackling as it is, and the Giants did them no favors in the second half.

More tomorrow. It hadn’t dawned on me until today why this season has bugged me so much. In 2005, it was easy to say that Chad’s injury was the reason the team was derailed, but so far, there’s no scapegoat, just a big hole where the run defense should be.

  1. Good points here, except for one:

“…like it or not, public sentiment is shifting away from #10.”

Public sentiment was shifting last week. After today, I think it’s about as shifted as it can possibly get.

  2. I told ya CB Aaron Ross (6′1 193) would prove hes a STUD! Revis will be good but like i said the difference is Revis is SOLID is everything but doesn’t STAND OUT in nothing.

Ross is a playmaker! He’s on every play extremely active and physical. You Jet fans obviously didn’t notice but Ross got benched the whole 1st half because he violated a team rule and ever since he took over in the 2nd half in Washington all he’s been doing is making plays.

The guy had 2 picks in one quarter! Revis has been struggling last 3 games! Right now with Revis and Leon Hall not playing well Ross is the best CB!

  3. Clearly, this is the rebuilding year that we managed to escape from last season. That said, those who know me know I was and am one of the biggest supporters of Pennington out there. Yet, in a lost season such as this, Mangini would be doing himself a major, major disservice to not get Clemens 6-8 games of experience at this point.

  4. Testing from Singapore. Just lost whole first comment due to technical problems.

  5. Ok, technology works.

Saw game on Yahoo Gamepass here in Singapore. Good thing that I can archive the game and watch it delayed on Monday daytime. Until last year, only option to get live result was to go on Gametracker live which meant getting up at 1 or 4am to track the game with drive charts and delayed results.

Given this seasons result so far, burning the early morning oil to follow the Jets would have been adding insult to injury.

Coles cannot be expected to make more spectacular catches from the father of Cole. I am a fan of Chad but think that he cannot shoulder the load any more. Of course, Nugent and defensive line are also to blame.

Time to see if Clemens can carry the load so that we can evaluate options in the draft. Chad would be better off with a team like Baltimore. Not wishing trade but he simply cannot carry the team with such a small margin of error at the moment.

Remarkable change in coaching as well this year. Last year, go for it on 4th down and try onside kicks. This year, at least 3 games where coach does not go for it on 4th early in the game. They need to show offense that they have confidence rather than showing defense confidence that clearly it does not deserve.

  6. I have bebn a Chad supporter in the past but yesterday made it clear that Chad is the weak link on the team. Yesterday was the first game I have been too in a few years. Being at the game allowed me to see the entire field and not just what the cameraman wants to focus on. There waere a few opportunities where receivers were open downfield and didn’t get a look from Pennington. Could it be that they were past his range? By the way, I was only talking about a 30 yard throw. It was obvious to me that the Giant defense did not have to defend the long pass. There is the problem with our running game.

This season is over for us. Let’s use the remaining 11 games to see what Clemment can do. Worst case is that we end up with a better draft pick. Hopefully with a few games under his belt, we may have a complete NFL quarterback.

Once again…. wait till next year…..

  7. Aaron Ross was a better CB than Revis in college and he is a better CB than Revis in the NFL and is a definite defensive ROY candidate. I see Terry Bradway’s influence as the Jets continue to waste top draft picks on players who are athletes with great triangle numbers who ‘project’ to be better NFL players than college players… See D’Brickashaw Ferguson, DeWayne Robertson, Justin Miller, Kellen Clemens, all first or second round Jet draft picks.

  8. Playing CB in the NFL is not only about the cornerback himself but also the team’s ability t rush. The Jets pass rush is non-existent whereas the Giants have three very good pass rushers. This makes a huge diference in a CB ability to play opposing WRs. In addition, it’s pretty easy to play CB against Chad these days as you never have to be back on your heels. I mean seriously, Coles and Cotch must be running fantastic routes to even be open when teams know that a pass won’t go more than 10-15 yards in the air.

  9. Hey Bassett, based on this post you should think about updating the “TJB Confidence Ratings”….

  10. DeWayne Robertson is the sole reason we can’t stop the run. in the 34 defense the DT must demand a double team. If the DT does not, a guard can shoot the B (or c) gap hand get his hands on the a LB. because our LBs line up 4-6 yards of the line. All the O-line need to do is to get the RB to line of scrimmage for an easy 3-6 yard gain.

Check the tape. DeWayne Robertson is consistely block on every play. When he is not block (due to a missed assigment) he miss tackles ,see the TD run be D. Ward yesterday. Correct this and we would have run defense.

  11. Matt, no one player is ever the reason for a bad run defense.

Among others, Vilma is atrocious. There was one play yesterday when he was unblocked and chasing Jacobs on a run wide left. Not only did he not run him down with his alleged terrific speed, but five yards down the field when Jacobs finally got to Vilma JV bounced off him like a butterfly.

Now I know Jacobs is tough to bring down, but he should be able to get to him sooner and wrap him up.

Vilma is as much a problem as DRob.

That said, neither fit the system and both should be traded ASAP for draft picks.

    Rebuilding time, again.

  12. Mr.DEWAYNE ROBERTSON is NOT the problem.ONE of the problems has primarily been the coaching staff’s detemination to make players fit schemes in which they don’t belong. When Mr ROBERTSON is APPROPRIATELY PLACED into 5 man front-rushes…he does fine. With all respect,it’s up to the coaches to maximize their players.
Lastly,I must say that……THE WORST PART OF BEING A JETS FAN IS HOW WE BLEED OFFENSIVE-LINE TALENT.In the last 3 years we have lost Mr.s Pete Kendall,Kevin Mawae, and Randy Thomas.IS THERE SOME REASON WHY THE JETS ORGANIZATION DOENS’T LIKE TO PAY OFFENSIVE LINEMEN?
Say what you want about Mr.Pennington’s arm or Mr Robertsons as a nose-tackle.We’ll never be a champion team until we find a way to attract and LIVE-WITH…(Coach Manigini’s biggest dilemma)…GREAT OFFENSIVE LINEMEN.

  13. Sigh. Chad is not the weak link. The pass defense is the weak link, followed by the run defense, followed by the running game. Chad is one of the stronger links, but he’s not good enough to carry the team, which is what the other weaknesses are forcing him to do. Guess what? The odds are extremely high that Kellen Clemens isn’t good enough, either.

Dewayne Robertson isn’t just the best lineman, he’s the best player in the front seven. When the Giants tried to run up the middle, they got stuffed. When they ran at the criminally overrated Shaun Ellis or the DE platoon on the other side, they ate the defense up.

As for Aaron Ross vs. Darrelle Revis, I would hold off on making any pronouncements. Revis plays for a team that has generated two sacks in five games. Ross plays for a team that put up twelve sacks in one game. It’s not a remotely fair comparison.

  14. The Jets are the unluckiest team in the league… I mean, to have 4 of the 5 games be lost because the other team taped signals. Boy, that’s tough. We feel for you up here. We all know that if it weren’t for taped signals, you would have crushed the Pats, and everyone else, so far this season. I mean, it’s obvious, right?

HAHHHAAHAH!!!!!! 1-4 b*tches!!!!! The karma police are doing their job.

    December 16th… Jets fans… December 16th. See you then…

  15. Actually, karma is what happens when you do something wrong. Reporting the Patriots for cheating when they were in fact cheating isn’t karma, it’s justice.

Karma is what the Pats are going to get when Peyton Manning goes through them like a knife through butter come January.

  16. My version of karma is wrong…. but Manning beating the Pats in January IS Karma? Hmmm… color me confused.

Mangini squealed like a little rat and not only did he wake up a sleeping giant in his own division, but also doomed his god-awful team at the same time. Karma, baby! Shoulda kept his mouth shut.

Oh, and at least we will be playing in January… (

  17. Ah, yes…no snitches!

Pats fans are kind of pathetic. Not the team. Just the fans.

  18. You must have no life when you post on another team’s blog
