Be(nt)lated Thoughts from Across the Pond – Week 5
This week, my thoughts from across the pond are later than usual. My apologies for this. For my Letterman-esque “Top Ten Reasons Why Bent’s Thoughts were Delayed”…join me after the jump.
Top Ten Reasons Why Bent’s Thoughts were Delayed
10. He was rendered speechless by the revelation (courtesy of Andre Dyson) that the Vinny Testeverde school of tackling is still going strong.
9. He has been washing himself clean because he felt dirty having been to a NBA game and kind of enjoying it
8. Chad Pennington threw a deep out in practice on Tuesday and he’s been waiting for it to land.
7. He’s been dancing in the backfield waiting for the Jets offensive line to open up a hole.
6. He’s been affected by the UK postal strike (that was bordering on topical…and political).
5. He’s been too busy setting booby traps in Wembley stadium for the Miami-Giants game.
4. Adrien Clarke was told to run a lap in Tuesday’s practice and he was waiting for him to finish.
3. It took him this long to read through the Chad debate on the blog.
2. He wanted to see if he could get more hits on a Friday.
1. He couldn’t be arsed.
New York-New York
I’d love to give my views on last week’s game, but (despite advertising (sic) it the previous week), it once again wasn’t aired in the UK in favour (sic) of the Lions-Skins snoozefest and the Fins-Texans slopfest. Looks like we are irrelevant again.
Obviously, it was frustrating to see the lead gradually disappear in the graphic in the top corner of the screen though. I hate that thing…gives me a heart attack every time it comes round to the Jets score.
I’ve said it before, when a team with no firepower scores two TD returns in a game, they are in trouble, because their defense will wear out in the second half, while the other team’s is fresh. Sure enough (just like in Pittsburgh in the Doug Brien Bowl), it happened again. I’m not saying Brad Smith should’ve tackled Leon at the five yard line, but I did get an uneasy feeling when they announced that score.
Let’s be positive though, the three TDs were all great plays. Who said we had no playmakers? Congratulations to Brad Smith on his first TD – he’s starting to look like a real wide receiver (despite the number 16 thing). On the other hand, without those three moments of brilliance, it could have been far uglier!
On Chad
This has been done to death, so I’ll be brief. You all make great points, there are a bunch of factors at play and admittedly Chad has looked bad in the clutch, after managing the game pretty well up to that point for the most part. I did see his horrible second interception, but QBs put the ball up for grabs like that all the time – the Jets just don’t have a 6’4″ guy to go up and get it like most other teams do. Therefore, it’s a bad call – doomed to failure. That worries me more than any deficiency in Chad. My own view is that while they are losing close games, I’m not ready to make the change, but that’s not to say they won’t fall completely apart in the next game. Hopefully not. It’s not quite time for a change yet…I’ll tell you when it is, don’t worry.
Other Random Ponderings
This season is getting a bit Groundhog Day-ish at the moment, there’s only so many words of encouragement and analysis you can come up with after the team suffers the same fate several times in a row.
If this goes on much longer, I might have to subject you to a clip show (best-of column) or even subject you to my not-insignificant library of Thomas Jones-Meagan Good material. Jones escapes this week, but he needs to stop sulking and start cracking a few more skulls. Go get ‘em, TJ.
That’s all I have right now. Mercifully short, but then all the best things in life are: See Washington, Leon.
Time to turn it around, guys…

I like the secret message idea Bent! Save us indeed!!

Bent–agree that those jump balls aren’t great for Coles or Cotcherry–maybe this is another way to get Chris Baker more looks. Spread the field with no huddle and force defenses into nickel near the goal line–we know the jets won’t run effectively down there anyway–then get Baker on a smaller DB, and give him the jump ball.
You’re right about B.Smith, too. I’m beginning to think that he will be a very good #2 type of reciever by the end of the season.
