Buzz: Chad Served His Notice?

Rich Cimini is reporting that Chad Pennington has been put on notice by Mangini. This quote from the Daily News on Mangini’s Monday presser:

Eric Mangini reiterated yesterday that Pennington still is the starting quarterback, but his latest vote of confidence included a first-time disclaimer. “I’ll continue to assess the whole situation, not just with that position, but with every position,” Mangini said.

No surprise there, that’s typical Mangini speak. What seems funny to me is that … what part of Pennington throwing the ball 22 times wasn’t a clear indication of the fact that the team is limiting him already?

In 17 2006 regular and postseason games, Pennington only had 3 games in which he threw the ball less than 25 times. One of those games was one in which he was pulled (Jacksonville) with 17 attempts and the other two times (IND 23 attempts and DET 22 attempts), he threw the ball for more than 70% and managed the game with a passing grade. Also in both those games, it wasn’t like he was coming off a bad performance the previous week where he mismanaged the ball in terms of causing interceptions

So far this season — not counting the New England game and the Baltimore game where he spent time off the field due to injury, Pennington threw 22 times in Miami (again in a game management decision, and coming off injury) and then two games where he saw more than 30 passes, and now after a 3 pick game against the Giants, he only threw the ball 22 times.

Add into this that the Jets only rushed 19 times against the Bills and 25 times against the Giants. The Giants were a tough team to run on, but the Bills are one of the teams you would expect the Jets to run on more than anyone. Then this past week, while playing a team with a good run defense in the Eagles, they magically decided to run the ball 30+ times? Hmm. This not to mention that the Jets first 10 plays (which at a minimum are generally pre-scripted) the ball was run seven times to Pennington’s three throws (all incompletions, including one P.I. penalty on Broderick Bunkley).

Pennington has already been put on notice, is already playing on a short leash which could get even shorter this weekend.

  1. I don’t think it’s a question of being put on notice, but rather an acknowldegement that Chad would be most effective throwing 25 times a game, often off of play action. The problem has been that the team hasn’t had a decent running performance in two years, so it hasn’t been an option. Against Philly, they were running well. If they were running poorly, Chad would have put the ball up 30+.

  2. [...] Chad, Chad, he’s our man, if he can’t do it, Kellen can! [...]

  3. Cincinatti will kill us!!!! It’s a shame to be this bad.

  4. I have to say, all I’m rooting for in that re-match is that the Jets break Tom Brady’s leg. Really, it’s high time we usher in the Matt Cassel era.

  5. Sean – I like the way you think. How come we get all the bad breaks when it comes to QB injury, including Vinny’s fluke in jury against NE in ‘99? Even when we knocked out Bledsoe, they get dumb-lucky and find out Brady is great. That should have been the end of NE & Belicheat right there.
