Outsiders’ Look: Buffalo Bills

by Bassett on October 25th, 2007 at 1:58 pm

Here’s a look and some short analysis on what the Bills have done this year.

Pass Offense: -25.9% (29th)
Rush Offense: -8.8% (22th)
Offensive Variance: 3.6% (20th)

Analysis: A decently consistently bad unit, the pass offense has been lurching under rookie Trent Edwards. All the same, their run game has been more productive than the Jets has so far this season, so expect them to use the run to their advantage on Sunday and pass opportunistically on the Jets.

Pass Defense: 8.3% (18th)
Rush Defense: 3.1% (25th)
Defensive Variance: 6.8% (11th)

Analysis: An fairly inconsistent unit, the Bills’ D isn’t as bad as the Jets’ unit (ranked by F.O. to be second worst in the league), but isn’t winning any awards. The Jets would be better to go after the run, but the Jets couldn’t score 20 points on this unit in their last matchup … a game in which the offense took the blame for the loss.

Special Teams: -8.6% (1st)

Analysis: The deadliest unit of the team and ranked tops by Football Outsiders this week. The punting and kick return game are their best areas in particular. Buffalo’s Special Teams have been good for a number of years, led by Pro-Bowl punter Brian Moorman. The Jets biggest edge here is in their kick returns. The weakest unit for Buffalo is their kicking game.
