2007: The Silver Linings

Come on you sad and grumpy Jetheads — time to look for our own rainbow connections!

As this is a bye week and the Jets will have some down time, I thought rather than dwell on the negative aspects of this season, it might be a good time to look at some of the positive developments — the silver linings in what undoubtedly have been heavy storm clouds pouring misfortune down on Jetland in 2007.

As such, looking ahead to brighter days, here are:

The Top 10 Things Jets Fans Can Look Forward To

10. Coaching continuity will remain intact as no one will be raiding the staff (although Bob Sutton may be available for a case of athletic tape).

9. Leon Washington will continue to improve returning kicks with the ever-increasing 4th-quarter opportunities.

8. By season’s end, David “The Hitman” Harris will be proficient enough to conduct a tackling symposium for his teammates during off-season OTAs, that is, if he can still move.

7. An inspired quarterback competition for the backup quarterback slot between Marques Tuiasosopo and Joe Notontherosteryet.

6. Lots of good defensive jersey numbers — #21, #36, #42, #50, #51, #54, #63, #92, #99 — should be available for next year’s roster. (droseatworks’ #50 may even become a collector’s item.)

5. Without having to make appearances in front of the camera on “The Sopranos” and “Sesame Street,” Eric Mangini will be able to spend more time behind the scenes in the film room.

4. The phrase “noodle-armed” can now be officially removed from the national sports lexicon in reference to the Jets quarterback (although “unfunny bald stooge” stays with the Monday Night Football booth discussion).

3. New offensive and defensive captains next season.

2. Without all the pesky playoff chatter, more time to focus on the 2008 NFL draft — Jets first pick at about 3:30 or so?

1. The Flight Crew has been unaffected by the team’s play.

  1. Unaffected? Sure.

But maybe the late Leon Hess was onto something. 10-6 without women on the field, 1-8 with? Bring back the utterly ridiculous flag-men!

  2. Clemens looked good, the only concern now is that he will not have the benefit of playing with a team that will be giving 110%- it’s only human nature for some players to mail it in with the season they’re having. Unfortunately, this may lower his QB ratings for people who keep stats and like to compare to other QB’s.

  3. #11: instead of watching playoffs, we can use that time to learn more about the top college offensive & defensive linemen than Mel Kiper

  4. #12: I love you Chad, but you were always the best cheerleader in the game. A return to cheering greatness combined with your visible flowing locks should make the fans happy again.

#13: Losing games doesn’t matter to the girls flashing fans gathered in the circular walkways at the half; in fact, it may encourage it!

  5. Nice picture of Ernest Borgnine, by the way.

  6. I will start the bidding at $250….
    it’s authentic!

  7. Plenty of good seats available at Meadowlands…

No way that we are dumping that many defensive players. Overall, that’s A LOT of holes to fill in FA and the draft.

Robertson(63), Vilma(51), Barrett(36) probably, but Thomas(99) just signed to an extension, Barton(50) was just publicly praised by Mangini, Hobson(54) probably is the only other LB with size suitable for the 3-4 next to Harris, and Ellis(93) will be better with better DT support. I’m on the fence about Dyson(21), although I can’t see us dumping him AND Barrett. His coverage skills have been abysmal this year.

And who’s 42? Was that Rashad Washington?
