News: Jets Sign LB Marques Murrell off Eagles Practice Squad

by Bassett on November 7th, 2007 at 6:14 pm

With the extra rotser spot the Jets still had open from waiving Rashad Washington (remember Prall was put back on the practice squad), the Jets signed linebacker Marques Murrell off the Philadelphia Eagles’ practice squad.

Murrell (6’2″, 246) is the younger brother of former Jet Adrian Murrell and played collegiately at Appalachian State. The Eagles orignally signed Murrell as an unrestricted free agent on April 30 and was re-signed to the practice squad on Sept. 3. While in the I-AA Murrell was a two-time I-AA All-America first-teamer and tabulated 36 sacks and a school record 18 fumbles forced. Murrell is the Boy Scout type who helped lead the team to two straight I-AA titles.

Murrell was known for his ability to get the the QB in college, but he’s undersized to play DE at the NFL level, especially in the Jets 3-4. Murrell could be used as a situational pass rusher, but also is the right size and frame to play ILB. Not sure when he’ll actually be activated by the Jets, but as the season wears on, Murrell might help to bolster a linebacking corps that has struggled this season with it’s depth. With a clocked 4.86 40 yard dash on his Pro Day, he seems to play faster than he clocks, so for me, it’s hard to imagine he’s quick enough to play outside in the Pros. My thought is that Murrell could see some limited time as the season wears on, but I’m not expecting to see him jumping in right now. Though he might be a guy to watch in OTAs and if he sticks around long enough, camp next summer.

Completely unrelated but come on…can the jets get ANY love this season? I could barely even read this with “all” the “quotes in there”.

Yes! I’ve been following this guy since his Junior year at App. State. He has potential.

He played well against us in preseason.

I just want to post that while I am glad Tangini are always looking to upgrade the team, I am sick and tired of signing other teams’ back-ups and cast offs and pretending that this strategy has any chance at all at significantly improving this very flawed team.

    mib–

A bit surprised B&B haven’t linked to that article yet. It makes total sense to me–when you’ve been tenants in your rival’s stadium for 20+ years, and when current management decides that such an arrangement is just fine…well, that’s what happens.

Queens was right there for the taking, but hey, Florham Park and half of the swamp is just as good!

    Thanks for nothing, Woody.

Looking at the stats, scouting reports, and clips, it’s clear he plays faster than his clocked speed. Seems like a good low-risk move to bolster our LB depth. Plus, I wonder if he could add value sooner on special teams?

p4p … i think that’s a really good point, rashad washington played special teams so i imagine that’s where you’ll see him immediately if he’s activated.
