After Further Review: Darrelle Revis’ Day in Foxborough
I wanted to take a closer look at how Darrelle Revis played this past weekend. Here’s what I saw on the replay, of course this isn’t all his plays, just some that I thought were of note.
10:28 1st Quarter — Revis jams Moss at the line, after giving Moss the sideline of the field, Brady throws a ball behind Moss and Revis tries to break back to the ball. He gets one hand on it but is unable to make the pick as Moss continues to run down the sideline.
13:27 2nd Quarter — On a 3rd and 6 inside the Jets red zone with the Patriots leading 7-0, the Jets bring pressure on Brady who throws a quick pass to Moss seting up for the catch about 2 yards before the sticks. Revis reacts as soon as he sees the throw is coming to Moss and hits Moss hard enough and wrapping him up properly to stop forward momentum and prevent the first down.
10:05 2nd Quarter — With five receivers, Revis is covering Kevin Faulk split out near the sideline. Revis gives Faulk about a six yard cushion. Faulk runs to Revis who is cushioning some then breaks back to the line of scrimmage for the catch. Revis prevents the first down with proper tackling technique, but the scheme allowed for soft coverage and the ability for Faulk to make the catch.
4:37 2nd Quarter — On a screen play to Jabar Gaffney on the left side of the field, Revis is responsible for Gaffney but gets blocked by Wes Welker initially taking him out of the play. Bryan Thomas helps with getting the tackle started around the line of scrimmage and Revis and others come in to prevent forward momentum.
12:01 3rd Quarter — With Revis giving Moss about a three yard cushion, the Jets bring six on a blitz. Drew Coleman reaches Brady first from the blindside, hitting Brady as he throws the ball deep to Moss. The ball stays up in the air too long and is too short for the route Moss was running. Revis who is inside has the track on the ball and makes the interception even while Randy Moss is interfering with Revis by grabbing his shoulders to prevent Revis from making the play.
15:00 4th Quarter — On a throwing play, Revis makes illegal contact with Jabar Gaffney, not getting his back turned as the ball was thrown and bumping the receiver (while getting the ball hit him in the back).

Awesome talent, the best open field tackler on the team. He should be in the Pro Bowl for many years to come. Watching him from the 1st game of the season (Pats) to now is amazing, what an improvement each week.
Imagine how good he could be if we could actually put a consistent pash rush together!
There is some hope on the defense with him, Harris, Rhodes, and Vilma (who I still think can make plays in this defense, but we’ll see.) The key is to get Thomas, Ellis, and Robertson to play like they did in the second half last year. Either that, or find guys who will be able to make plays.
Revis, though, is tremendous.
let the vilma dream die. the guy can’t tackle regardless of scheme.
Hi Jeff i-
Take it for whatever it might be worth, but I don’t know if you noticed during the telecast on Sunday that Simms basically all but said that when gushing about David Harris. Simms said something like Harris wasn’t “one of those guys who make contact and then drag the ballcarrier down a few yards later” (or something to that effect).
Vilma is a goner
bassett – i’ve been a vilma critic for years. it’s nothing personal. i just call it like i see it and the guy is just a horrible tackler — dating back to college. jet fans wanted to annoint this guy the next ray lewis from the start bc he’s from miami (which is totally irrational). for years people would cite how many tackles he had and how awesome a LB he is and ignore the simple fact that ballcariers get 2-3 yards after contact against him consistently. that probably explains how we still had one of the worst run defenses even during his best “statistical” years.
i e-mailed one of my buddies who loves vilma after the draft and said that harris would finally show him how a middle linebacker should play. harris IS what everyone had hoped vilma was.
