bassett – i’ve been a vilma critic for years. it’s nothing personal. i just call it like i see it and the guy is just a horrible tackler — dating back to college. jet fans wanted to annoint this guy the next ray lewis from the start bc he’s from miami (which is totally irrational). for years people would cite how many tackles he had and how awesome a LB he is and ignore the simple fact that ballcariers get 2-3 yards after contact against him consistently. that probably explains how we still had one of the worst run defenses even during his best “statistical” years.

i e-mailed one of my buddies who loves vilma after the draft and said that harris would finally show him how a middle linebacker should play. harris IS what everyone had hoped vilma was.

Take it for whatever it might be worth, but I don’t know if you noticed during the telecast on Sunday that Simms basically all but said that when gushing about David Harris. Simms said something like Harris wasn’t “one of those guys who make contact and then drag the ballcarrier down a few yards later” (or something to that effect).

There is some hope on the defense with him, Harris, Rhodes, and Vilma (who I still think can make plays in this defense, but we’ll see.) The key is to get Thomas, Ellis, and Robertson to play like they did in the second half last year. Either that, or find guys who will be able to make plays.

Revis, though, is tremendous.

Awesome talent, the best open field tackler on the team. He should be in the Pro Bowl for many years to come. Watching him from the 1st game of the season (Pats) to now is amazing, what an improvement each week.
Imagine how good he could be if we could actually put a consistent pash rush together!
