Coaching Carousel Starting to Spin?

Even before I saw this story in today’s Daily News about Bob Sutton being made the sacrificial goat after this season, I saw this story about the Oakland Raiders possibly firing their defensive coordinator, Rob Ryan, with the speculation that head coach Lane Kiffin will want to bring in his father, longtime defensive guru Monte Kiffin.

If you recall, when Mangini was initially hired, one of the first coordinators he made a play for was his “buddy” Ryan (pun intentional), resulting in Raiders owner Al Davis giving him a new three-year contract. In 2006, Ryan’s defense was third overall in the NFL, and after returning all 11 starters this season, has slipped a bit — all the way down to 26th. One of the issues (and this might sound familiar) has been that with the Raiders lowly offense, the defense has been spending too much time on the field and wearing down. If you’re curious, the Raiders run a 4-3.

For what it’s worth, when reporters in Oakland questioned Ryan about his job security, he said, “I’d be out of a job for two minutes. I mean, who are we kidding? I’m not worried about it. Love the Raiders. If that happens, so be it. I’d be out of a job for two minutes.”

Ryan meets with Davis next Wednesday, around the same time that Sutton will undoubtedly be meeting with the Jets front office. Obviously, (as Cimini has also speculated at the end of his story) it’s just something to watch.

I had speculated about this potential move earlier in the year. If Ryan does get jettisoned by Oakland, it would be interesting to see if/when he lands with the Jets. Of course Al Davis knows this and probably won’t let it happen, but you never know. With all the holes/needs this team has going into the off season, this is the least of our worries. I’m with SackDance’s thoughts on getting a legit Red Zone threat (again for the second year in a row).

Thanks for the shout out and the Jets still need a legit redzone threat (either a tall WR or pass-catching TE), but I’m real concerned about QB and the OL. This season the Jets got down to the redzone and couldn’t run it in and, besides the fade to LC, couldn’t pass it in. I also am real tired of seeing redzone INTs. So, now I’m convinced that the Jets need to shore up the foundation of any championship-level team…OL and QB. If KC is the answer, then he needs a redzone weapon and a better OL…I just think that KC is too much of a question.

This whole Sutton for Ryan swap makes too much sense for it to actually happen.

since he’s been in oakland, their run defense has looked like this (YPG):

    2004 – 125.8
    2005 – 128.1
    2006 – 134
    2007 – 147.6

somehow the possibility of ryan taking over isn’t that exciting to me. i’d like to actually see some improvement in this area next year.

you also have to compare their offensive numbers to understand their crappy rush-defense. He has done alot with what little he has

Once again, Sack Dance has correctly established the priority. Our red zone offense needs to be able to run it in easily from 1st and goal from the 3. That will open up WR and TE. Coles and Baker will look great if the other team has to jam 8 in the box.

IOW, fix the damn OL — either before or after fixing the front 7 on D. The skill positions on both sides of the ball will all look a lot better.
