- Is Vernon Gholston the right guy for this team?
- Jetstream reminds us of the nightmare that Tony Wise has been.
- Gary Grund heard the same Ocho Cinco interview as me, and came to the same conclusion.
- Questions in Tennessee if they can lock up Albert Haynesworth.
- Typical Favre on whether he’ll return and who he’s told what.

Picking Gholston means that a lot of cap space on Bowens and Thomas gets wasted. Although, I think pass rush was the defense’s greatest flaw; from a cap perspective, ILB might make more sense (of course, I’m assuming Vilma is gone). Also, in the 3-4, the LBs pass rush, so a guy like Maualuga would help in the pass rush and be stout against the run. Again, it’s tough to tell at this point where the FO is going.
I agree on Tony Wise. Maybe Mangini can offer the world to Bill Muir, one of the great unsung coaches in the NFL. When Harm purged him, it was the beginning of the end for the OL.

SD99–What happened to your love affair with Matty Ice? And what do you think of the Q–Quentin Groves. Sporting News, in its first mock, had the Jets taking him.

Bent – As you knwo, this happens every year. There are 32 first round slots but something like 40 guys who are projected into the first round. So the Jets will have an opportunity to get two top players. Had they not traded the WAS pick last year for Thomas Jones they’d have been in position to get (as an example) Justin Blaylock, who many wanted the Jets to pick in the first round and who would have been a magnificant addition to what turned out to be a miserable offensive line. It might have been Pete who?

Rich, Matty Ice is my personal first choice and should be there at 6, but it is exceedingly unlikely that the Jets will take a QB at 6. The Jets should target offense, and if not QB, offensive line. But, their holes are at LG and RT, both positions that would be wastes at 6. So, then, the Jets will probably draft “need” which is what Tannenbaum has done last 2 years. But, identifying that need is what I’m wondering about. Pass rush is a need, but there won’t be an elite pass rusher available…a DE/OLB can’t-miss hybrid (I think Long may be the closest to a can’t miss prospect, but he’ll be gone at 6). That’s why if the Jets don’t draft QB and if Vilma is traded (and he should be), then ILB makes the most sense because, IMO, Maualuga is exactly what the Jets need at ILB. The issue with him is he might not come out and he may not be worthy of the no. 6 pick. I guess that I won’t be upset with a guy like Gholston, Groves or whoever is the identified pass-rusher because Tannenbaum/Mangini, for the most part, have been solid with their defensive draft picks, except for Schlegel. The Combine, pro days and all-star bowls will also bring forth certain candidates. If Matty Ice performs well in all the draft dog-and-pony shows and Tannenbaum/Mangini believe KC is not the answer, I think they’ll consider a QB. They drafted Harris (and traded up to do it) recognizing that Schlegel, who they cut, was a mistake, so you never know.

Bent–Sorry about my lousy writing skills. No, TSN pegged the Jets as taking Groves with the sixth pick in the draft. A bit high I suppose. Also, Gholston was nowhere to be found in their first round.

As much of a playmaker as Johnson is, he has a big mouth too. I don’t think Mangini is looking for that type of player. He’s not exactly a “positive” force in the locker room.
And even if he did want out of Cincy, I don’t think Cincy would grant his request and if for some reason they did, certainly their asking price would be too steep.
