Kerry Rhodes and … who? There’s no doubt to the fact that the Jets have one safety spot cemented for 2008, but what about that other one? Over the past season, we’ve seen a rotation of players from Erik Coleman to Eric Smith and even Abram “The SCUD” Elam, but is there an every down player out there? Should there even be? Are these guys who can fit into certain roles (i.e. run defense, pass defense) and not players who can spend three downs on the field?
The Jets have brought in some other players like Darnell Bing, but he’s had a hard time sticking in the NFL … would the Jets be any different? Can the Jets re-sign Rhodes? Will he let them?

On an unrelated basketball note, did anyone notice the Lakers just traded for Pau Gasol? Man that sounds like a sick starting lineup once Bynum returns.

Draft a safety in the 4th round :-)
Seriously, you can win with unspectacular play at safety. Since Rhodes is the playmaker, I’d look for someone who can just play solid next to him. I really don’t have a problem with either of the Erics (but I think Coleman is an UFA, and I see no reason to put much effort into bringing him back either), but Elam made far too many mental mistakes.

How about Will Demps, impending free agent from Houston?

One question was if Kerry will let the Jets sign him. If he refuses, he loses a year of big bucks. So, if we are willing to pony up a top ten safety salary for 4 or 5 years with enough of the money up front as a bonus, of course he will. He could get hurt and lose any chance for the big money Seems like a no brainer too.
No one on our roster is appropriate for the other safety. Personally, I like cleaning house since there is no temptation to be fooled again. Coleman has had enough chances and we know what he cannot do. Elam is a mistake waiting to happen.
Frankly, if a S falls into our lap with 4th round pick or not too costly FA, fine. But since we are not going to win it all next year, this is one position I don’t care if it doesn’t get fixed yet. IOW, I would be other cheap dates who at worst will be as bad as Elam and Coleman and who might surprise. The Miller idea is intriguing too.

i kind of liked elam…i like his hitting ability to put fear in recievers…yes he made mistakes but i think those mistakes can be corrected…as for drafting another safety would be a waisted pick…j.miller was impressing before he went down with the knee injury according to randy lang and others…and to try him out at safety wont be a bad idea either…lets just wait and see what happens…just my thoughts…

I like Darnell “Bada” Bing.

I always like the idea (in my head) of trying J. Miller at the other safety position. I know hes not the biggest guy….but in my opinion he isnt that bad of a tackler…got pretty good hands….and hes fast…he just isnt the best at coverage…he would play coverage less at safety maybe some more zones….i dont know just my idea
