Thank Jeebus: Patriots Go 18-1

Ahh sweet, sweet justice … FAIL!!!
Living in Massachusetts, this was the best option for me, but I know that for many of you, you are the ones who have to deal with Giants fans on a daily basis, and I sympathize, but admittedly am seeing things from my “what will be more fun for me when I walk into work on Monday?” perspective. For for those of you who can’t relate, I’m sorry, but as much as I have had to bite my tongue since moving to Boston regarding their sports teams, I am looking forward to the next week of sports radio, TV and print coverage on this most notable collapse of collapses.
Maybe seeing perfection get dashed on the rocks of the fourth quarter makes me wicked for delighting in other’s misfortunes. Maybe watching Bill Belichick pull a Randy Moss and leave the field before the game finished had me shrieking like a little school girl. Maybe hearing sob stories on the news that printshops in Boston’s Chinatown printed 19-0 shirts that are now worthless makes me mean-spirited. Maybe seeing little kids on the news crying in Arizona while leaving the stadium makes me a monster. Maybe watching the news and (check this video .. it’s fantastic) hearing reports that “grown men” were crying in Boston bars — which papered windows to allow fans to grieve away from the prying eyes of reporters — makes me heartless … so be it … I’ll gladly take all those labels and more, just to see my faint hope realized, and the Patriots choke on the greatest of all stages.
Now, let’s be frank, it’s not like the Jets had anything to do with this. That credit goes fully and totally to the Giants *shudders* … I think I need a shower … but I can deal with my self-loathing for actually cheering for the Giants on another day.
And as far as we know, the Jets are still battling back from the reputation of being nothing more than a 4-12 team. The Jets aren’t a great team, or could even dream to be the greatest, most dominant team in the history of the sport … that’s a long ways away.
But at least the Jets won’t be branded as the greatest team ever to not close the deal.

Ahahahahahahahaha!
I Share your thoughts and feelings. I am a Jet’s Fan but I also support the Giants. especially Eli who is a cool , humble and good guy. Next, year let’s hope it will be Chad’s turn.
It goes to show cheaters NEVER win! Come-uppance Surly Bill!!
I watched the game with a bunch of people, including two of my best friends, who happen to be loud obnoxious Pats fans (redundant, I know). As much as I love them, however, I loved even more the looks of abject failure plastered to their faces at the end of the game, and how they scurried out of the party like Belijerk scurrying off the field.
I’m sure we’ll hear plenty about it from Giants fans for a long time, but for right now, it was pretty sweet watching someone slay the dragon on the biggest of stages.
(By the way, Bassett — that “Fail” site is full of win!)
As I said the other day, it is the lesser of two evils, but at least I feel better knowing I am evil and smile about it.
There is some solace in seeing Bill Belichik humbled by failing on the grandest stage. It was oh so sweet watching his post game conference knowing he had a sour look on his face from the bitter taste from choking back his own vomit because he had to answer questions about his humitiation.
Ahhh! There is now a bright spot in this 4-12 season for me as a Jets fan! I get to look forward with hope and aspirations of the Jets future success in Free Agency and the Draft, while Belichik is sick to his stomach for the rest of his life over the fact that he couldn’t finish 19-0!!!!!!
Ah so great to see that weasel Belichick slither off the field! We’ll have to deal with the Giant fans. I hope Mangini and Mr. T noticed the difference in the game- the front 7 on “D” completely rocked Brady and his confidence- so nice to see! We need pass rushers! this will make Revis a Pro-bowler and the rest of our d-backs look good who ever they are.
Guys…its no doubt verrrrry satisfying that the pats are the biggest footnote in the history of the nfl…. but as a die hard jet fan, and as someone who pretty much hates the giants and most of THEIR smuggy fan base…it also does sting a bit that they won. I am 36, have not tasted a supe…my bro who is a giant fan has tasted 3, including one of the sickest runs to a supe ever!!!
cmon…yeah we are all laughing pretty hard that the pats lost… but we have to admit it stings a bit in our guts too.
congrats though…a great D prevailed. Hmmm…maybe one day we will have a defense we can be proud of.
and every giant fan should order that book and have a huge book burning party in the meadowlands parking lot!!!!
i still havent seen beli-jerks post game….gotta be greeeaaaat!
I cannot believe how a really good draft can pay dividends instantly. Ross, Smith, Bradshaw, Boss, Alford, Johnson, DeOssie.
7 rookies. Other than DeOssie the other draft picks made significant plays.
Third year player Justin Tuck had a huge game! We need a diamond in the ruff like him.
Rooting for the Giants yesterday was SO difficult. However, seeing Bellichick, Brady and all lose made it all worthwhile.
Perfect post, Bassett. You really couldn’t have put it better.
growing up i hated the giants, but now i’m so starved for good football, I occasionally root for the giants as well. This year, it really bothered me how the media and “fans” were so down on Eli that I started rootin for them hard starting with week 13 or so.
If the jets can learn anything from what the giants did, its that the offensive, and defensive lines have to be dominant.
My friends and I have been having a discussion around 20 and 0. Is it possible? Here is the logic.
Check it out, my earlier theory that there could be mathematically a 20-0 season I now believe is correct. You could have all four division winners be undefeated because they do not play everyone (i.e each other) in their conference and thus one team would have to be a wild card team (based on tie breakers, I suppose). Thus if that team ran the table like the Giants are about to do, you would have a 20-0 team.
Please chime in, ds
A close friend of mine is a huge Patriots fan. I texted my friend with “18-1″ after the Patriots were dead and buried. What message did I receive in return?
“You better enjoy the Giants win, because the Jets will never get there”
What the F*&^ ??
I mean can a man from Jersey just root for the home team?
What my friend said gives you a look inside the minds of Patriots fans. They cant handle being beaten. They couldnt handle the immense pressure that comes with being the best. They lost the one game that counts.
I would rather have the Jets back themselves into the playoffs on a miracle wild-card and ride to a winnings superbowl, than go 18-1.
The only thing I could say to defend my teams honor was:
“At least the trophy is coming back to OUR stadium. Maybe it will make NewYork teams winning contagious! Any time a NJ/NY area team can beat a Boston area team, IM HAPPY!!”
it was easier to root for the giants this year without barber, and without shockey in the postseason.
Belicheck is getting a free pass on his behavior at the end of the game. It appears that someone goofed in AZ in running the clock down but obviously there was still time left. Belicheck just decided he had enough either way and just left. With two seconds left. Left his team to hang on while he abondoned them.
The biggest a** in sports.
From a Jets perspective the Giants victory make it clear what the Jets need draft-wise if the want to beat New England every once in a while in their biannual meetings.
Jets must get 1 of these half dozen stud D-Lineman in the first round and probably 1 or two later on in the draft.
I wish we had a 4-3 defense like the giants. The D-Line dominated! I hope the oncoming days with Spygate add to the Pats losses.
Can we get a couple of these gmen linemen playing in green?? Oh… i forgot we are only trying to get 3-4 players. Maybe once Mangini is let go and we have accumulated lots of 3-4 players then we can make a run at 4-3 players….
The circle of front-7 defense.
The ‘72 Dolphins continue to sip champagne and Jets fans are happy? I just don’t get it.
Going 4-12 and not making the playoffs was a lot better then going undeafeted all year and then losing in the super bowl. Years from now, no one will remember what the Jets did in 2007, but everyone will remember the choke job the Pats did in the Super Bowl. So in hindsigh, going 4-12 wasn’t nearly that bad. We’ll never see another Jet highlight of the 2007 season, but the 2007 Patriots will live forever in infamy with the Buffalo Bills as the biggest choke artists in Super Bowl history!
The Giants defense wasn’t particularly good for most of the year. They have terrific front line talent and they played out of their skulls, but you’d probably prefer to have a defense that actually produces all year instead of forcing you to go on an improbable run.
Anyway, I feel as thrilled as I did when the Colts beat New England last year, if not more so. Having the Pats go 19-0 would have taken the juice out of the NFL for a long time, because what would be the point? Even if the Jets were to win a Super Bowl, it would be reduced to relative insignificance by that undefeated season. Not anymore. (The 1972 Dolphins are free to be undefeated because they played a joke of a schedule and no one in their right mind considers them the best team of all time; it wouldn’t have been that way with this New England team.)
It was just great to be able to tell my somewhat understanding that 1) cheaters never prosper 2) win or lose act with class.
A great day for my 77 year-old Dad who has watched his Giants from the Polo Grounds to the Stadium to the Swamps. And he made sacrifices to miss watching his Giants 7 & then 8 times a year from 1971 – 1978 when we had JETS season tix (which I got back in 1984 when I got my driver’s license)
Nikolas said: “I cannot believe how a really good draft can pay dividends instantly. Ross, Smith, Bradshaw, Boss, Alford, Johnson, DeOssie.

Ross: fell over enabling Moss to score TD
Smith: bobbled catch for Hobbs INT
Bradshaw: fumbled snap
Johnson: overpursued on key Faulk 3rd down run
Boss: Badly dropped pass in first half.
Just kidding though – it was a great draft.
seanmac made the point I was going to make about them Dolphins. It’s a nice achievement that they went undefeated, but their opponents strength of schedule was .400 and the most memorable thing about the team was Garo Yepremian’s passing ability. I am not bothered by that at all.
After hearing it from Pats fans that came to this blog earlier in the year just to mock us for supporting a team that was struggling (and suggesting that somehow this was deserved punishment for Mangini being a “rat”), it was a lot easier to root for the Giants than I thought it would be. I’d rather someone else had beaten them, but it was truly the lesser of two evils.
At no point would I ever be tempted to even consider going onto a Pats blog and rub their faces in it, though. I’m sure real Pats fans know how tough it is to win the big game (Bill Simmons article is refreshingly honest), and a lot of the mouthier fans were just bandwagon jumpers. Sadly, they are probably over the fact that they lost already.
The Giants defense is really without comparison right now in the way the front seven is comprised. They have a bunch of young defensive ends, some of whom are playing out of position and all of whom will command big money in a few years time, but they are really onto something which capitalises (sic) on the greater athletic ability of DEs these days.
This could be the alternative to a 3-4 defense if you want to build a cap friendly long term unit, but it remains to be seen whether they can afford to replace guys who leave, starting with Strahan. Full credit to the Giants.
Great game. Adalius Thomas was excellent in a losing effort for the Pats. The Tyree play was phenomenal.
the best thing to say at a time like this is THANK GOD the g-men won it…THANK GOD the giant deffense was relentless…THANK GOD we’re not gonna hear talk of the pats. going down in history as the greatest team ever…hopefully this will be the begining of the end for the pats…
anyway, like i said in past postings…tom brady becomes average if he doesn’t get the time he needs to throw the ball…he rushed some passes, was late on a few, over throw on some and under threw on others…becuz he got rattled and had no time…just like what happens to every other qb in the league…that is why we need to build our o-line…but the giants proved a better relentless d-line will overcome a verygood o-line…that is also why we need olbs and a massive NT…hopefully we will build both fronts this offseason to increase our chances to become a more competetive team in 08…just my thoughts…
I don’t know the beginning of this MasterCard commercial, but I can write the ending: “The look on Bellicheat, Kraft, and Harrsion’s faces?……..Priceless.” I still don’t understand the logic that Jets fans can’t “root” for the Giants – their paths intertwine so rarely, there’s any harm – unless, or course, they’re actually playing each other. Harrison is absolutely the dirtiest player around, and another example of how that Pats will do anyting barely within (and often outside0 the rules to gain an advantage. Bellichicken is the poster child for not looking up to successful people in sports – he can win all he wants, but he’s about the lousiest excuse for a human being around. And Kraft and his smug little smile can slither back to Foxborough and back under the rock he crawled out from.
And the Walsh saga hasn’t even hit full steam yet. The league and the Pats are going to take a big hit for this. Of course, the league should be absolutely ASHAMED of itself for the way they nickel-and-dime their former players that need medical help. If Arlen Specter really wants to do something useful with the NFL, how about making these billionaires share just a little of the wealth with the “gladiators” that made this league possible in the first place? Absolutely ridiculous that the league tries to play itself off as altruistic, when they absolutely ignore their foundation. And how does Gene Upshaw still draw a breath? If I were the ex-players, he’d be looking over his shoulder 24-7.
Finally, what’s with Steve Tisch’s remarks about the “fans of New York City?” The Jets and Giants are more than happy to take the Garden State’s money, and play (and practice here), but can we get even a mention? Look, I fully understand that this originated as a New York team, but let’s not pretend that New York City is the be-all and end-all for the Giants and Jets.
Well, one thing’s for sure…
Brady with a bad ankle < Chad with a bad ankle.
*runs off and hides in closet*
Yeah, it was great to see the Pats lose and it was even better to see Belicheat coach poorly. But, I’m a New Yorker, born in the City, Jets fan since ‘72. Up until the Giants beat the Bills in ‘90, there was parity between the Jets and Giants. The Giants history was made up mostly of colossal losses. Beating the pathetic Broncos in a route was never equal to the Jets’ Super Bowl III victory. The Bills defeat changed that, but you could always pin it on Parcells and LT. But, that gave the Giants 1 more Super Bowl victory than us. No Giants fan trumpets the terrible loss to the Ravens. So, being in 3 Super Bowls, but winning 2 put the Jets only 1 Super Bowl behind ad Super Bowl III was still more historic.
Not now. The Giants win yesterday places their win up there as one of the biggest in all of professional sports. Moreover, the Jets simply out-classed the Colts in a game that, while close, was never really in doubt. The Giants came from behind and beat a great team, coming off of a great season, with a great QB and great coach.
As Jets fans, we had Super Bowl III. The greatest Super Bowl upset victory of all time. Now, we have nothing. We’re 2 Super Bowl wins away from parity with the Giants. So, yeah, the Pats lost. Woop-dee-doo. I’ll be avoiding the local news tomorrow so I don’t have to see footage of a ticker-tape parade in my City celebrating the Giants, again.
agree with u sack….and glock, while its admirable that u take the angle of rooting for new york and u say u dont understand why jet fans cant root for the giants b/c they dont play each other so whats the big deal. DUDE…the giants and jets are polar opposites!!!! giant fans and jet fans are usually different types of people!! football is taken much more seriously b/c its only 16 games, every game and season is short and poof its gone. Its very very hard to be a fan of one and not dislike the other. And in this case, if u are a giant fan its not so hard to be cool with the jets, b/c we are the 2nd class citizens in this town. Read somewhere today, an email post to one of the ny papers…a giant fan saying “u guys should wipe the jets off the back page forever…giants are gonna win 2-3 or 4 in a row!!”. they see us as second class….b/c in most cases giant fans are the arrogant rich jerks. NOW, i am a yankee fan…which i am told is a rare combo…jets and yankees. But the advantage is i have a nice balance in my sports life….tons of titles with one…..and hopelessness with the other =). But when we do win the supe, it will be all the more rewarding….like the rangers waiting 50+ years…. but right now, yeah i am loving the burn on the pats…but i am a little nauseous as well b/c most of the giant fans i know are smug and arrogant about their team.
Lets face it, both teams have arrogant fans. I happen to live in New Hampshire and the Pats fans up here are obnoxious, especially to a Jets fan. They try to “convert me”, totally ignore the blatant cheating by their players (Moss pushes off 60% of the time or more and never gets flagged for it), and assume that they will be crowned with the Lombardi Trophy when the pre-season ends (I actually saw Carvel ice cream cakes with “Superbowl XLII 19-0!!” written on them). This “undefeated” season made it unbearable up here as a Jets fan. I watched the game with 30 or so Pats fans and I do have to admit that I loved hearing them say things like “This isn’t supposed to happen to US!!” or “The Giants got lucky!” Now I don’t have to hear the endless undefeated talk on top of the normal jabbing I get on a weekly basis. Pride goes before a fall and the Pats fell hard. I know those of you who are in the tri-state area hear more from Giants fans and I sympathize with you (I’m the only Jets fan in my family–the rest of them are Giants fans), but I had to vote with my own plight in mind.
And yes I do plan on buying one of those cakes…
Here’s my take on it. Divisional rival always always trumps fellow city rival. As a Yankee fan I may dislike the Mets but I’m damn well rooting for them against the Bosox. Additionally as a Yankee & Jets fan I been hearing way too much chirping from the Boston fans about the Red Sox’s & Patriot’s greatness, so my hatred is more towards Boston than a fellow NY team.
well said falcon and kj…. in the case of mets red sox and giants pats, its an easy call on who to root for. BUT i gotta say that if the pats were 17 and 1 going into that supe…i prob would have rooted for them. A 3rd supe for the giants in my lifetime is still hard to deal with…what made it ok was stopping perfection. And yes, the overall boston success lately made this loss for the pats especially gratifying. Gotta be tough being a jets fan in new england FALCON….u have my sympathies. BUT, i am sure the first jets pats game down here will bring a smile to ur face…when we serenade the pats with “18-1″ chants!!!
i still hate the freaking giants with a passion!!! but no tiki and no shockey was ok with me…as they are 2 of the bigger asses on the team.
When we got knocked out by the Chargers, all I could think about was “please don’t let the Pats run the table”. Thank you G-men. I have a new NFC team to root for now.
Since I’m old school here, I still consider the Jets’ no. 1 divisional rival to be the Dolphins. Under no circumsances would I ever root for the Dolphins in a Super Bowl. Now, you Yankees fans, answer me this, who do you root for, the Mets or the Orioles in the World Series? No Yankees fan that I know would root for the Mets. To me, the Pats are the Orioles of the AFC East, the no. 2 historical rival. You just can’t root for your crosstown rival over the no. 2 divisional rival…it’s against the rules.
Bent,
I think it was Webster who fell down on the Moss TD.
As for the Giants vs. Pats controversy I’d much rather see the Giants take it. It’s much more gratifying to see a NY team win than a team from Boston. I swear Boston fans are some of the least respectful fans I’ve ever encountered and have the hugest egos as well. I’ve also got very good friends who are very happy based on Sundays outcome and although it couldn’t be the Jets, I wouldn’t take that away from them.
SD? What if your hatred towards ur no. 2 divisional rival is greateer than crosstown rival? I personally hate the pats more than any team in professional sports(nba, nhl or mlb).
I never cared about cross town rivalry unless it was a division rivalry(Nets and Knicks). For me if the mets dont make it to the wrld series, I dont mind Yankees doing the honors(the more to rub upon them boston folks, especially pats fans).
But maybe living in DC area I dont have to hear from any obnoxious jint-fans.
SACK…if its the mets vs anyone but the red sox….i root for the mets to go down. I got 2 older brothers, one met one yankee…so we grew up killing each other. the subway series shut my met brother up pretty well….still gives me the “u guys have all stars everywhere” arguement. And of course i answer with “yeah the mets are really clipping coupons”. football…same deal…the met brother is giant…the yankee brother is jet. But he has lessened his hatred of the giants as he has gotton older…he is 41 now. He does hate the mets as much as ever though. And a mets sox series he would join me in rooting for the mets. he was rooting for the giants in the supe….b/c he does share the extreme hatred of the pats..but in general he just doesnt hate the giants as much as he used to. AND i agree the fins will always be our number one rival…but since they blow…its hard to hate em as much now.
Yeah, I think you’re right. But I made my point, with rookies you have to take the rough with the smooth but at the end, those guys came up big!
I posted this elsewhere on TJB, but it belongs here…
I just finished watching the parade from a 3rd floor window in my building on B’way. I threw shredded paper. I took a picture of Eli and Strahan. I endured jokes from my work colleagues about how the Jets will never be in this position.
I feel so dirty.
@Nikolas, DeOssie did make some significant plays. First of all his snaps to Feagles were perfect and he made the tackle on the giants last kick-off.
I forgot to mention about Ray Ventrone’s hit on the last kickoff. What a play that was. Shame our roster was so deep we couldn’t find a roster spot for him. *rolls eyes*
Bent, not to mention Ventrone was great with kids and was always the last guy out there signing autographs during training camp. I guess we have too many high character guys, too.
