Peter Prisco asks and answers the big question on many Jets fans lips
Is it bigger than the New York Jets beating the Baltimore Colts? No, it is not. The Jets were 18-point underdogs and they represented the old AFL, a league the NFL viewed as inferior. But more people will remember this one. Pro football wasn’t as popular then.
I am glad that Prisco thinks that the Jets will retain their spot, but I wasn’t alive then so although I appreciate the history, it’s hard for me to feel much ownership.
UPDATE: His point about the NFL versus the upstart AFL makes total sense and I think the win led credibility to the larger single league format. What’s worth noting though is that only so many people remember that game and the present it much easier to recall …

You’re right that nobody remembers Super Bowl III! They have a poll on nfl.com about what is the biggest Super Bowl upset. Right now Jets-Colts has gotten 17% of the votes… Giants-Pats 73%…73%!?!!

The Giants only lost by 3 points to this team during the regular season. So how could this be the biggest upset ever? IT ISN’T!!!
The JETS were picked by no one to beat the Colts except Joe Willie Whiteshoes. And the JETS win forced the NFL to merge with the NFL. So it is and always will be the BIGGEST UPSET. So CASE CLOSED. -
If it weren’t for SuperBowl III, the game would not be what it is today. In fact, the NYJ may have folded like the rest of the AFL and we we’d be some other team’s fans. Joe Willie’s Jets are the reason we have Super Bowl Parties and the hype around one game a year for all casual and non-fans alike. History was made Sunday no doubt, but not the kind of LEAGUE changing history the Jets imprinted on the world. For those too young to remember, they should really learn their heritage: http://www.remembertheAFL.com

I just finished watching the parade from a 3rd floor window in my building on B’way. I threw shredded paper. I took a picture of Eli and Strahan. I endured jokes from my work colleagues about how the Jets will never be in this position.
I feel so dirty.
