Film Room: Berman Needs Codeine to Watch the Jets

by Bassett on February 11th, 2008 at 12:21 pm

It seems that the Chris Berman “Anchorman” style off the air stuff is finally coming out on YouTube, and man, it’s worth it. Apparently, the 2000 version Jets caused Chris Berman to need some Tylenol with a codeine twist to perform his broadcast duties during Christmas-time in what I believe is the ESPN Zone Time Square location. Just watch the video and you’ll understand.

For those of you who like Chris Berman, we’re sorry … not because of this, but for you.

UPDATE: ESPN has forced YouTube to remove the videos of Berman and even released a statement about their precious, but worry not!  Deadspin to the rescue! God save Will Leitch!!!

I’m not sure I follow why Berman would need codeine…the Jets were a pretty good team in 2000, especially “six weeks” before this game which was likely the Baltimore game on Dec 24. Wasn’t 2000 the year of the Monday night miracle?

BTW, how in the world did we lose this game…here is a link to the stats from the game…unreal, only the jets could put up these numbers and still lose by 2 touchdowns.

lololol…i always wondered with all their nice guy BS on the air how these guys were off the air…glade to see the human part of him come out on the air…do i think any less of him…no because he’s been doing his job…

Wow, if he felt that way in 2000 then I wonder how he felt when I was coaching the Jets!

Think he’s complaining about what the atmosphere will be like in the place, not the Jets play. The clip’s a riot nonetheless.

And maybe it was that fateful Ravens game, but I’m wondering whether the game/day in question took place a few weeks earlier against Oakland. If memory serves, that contest was played at night, increasing the chances of ABC coverage. I am positive, however, that the Jets got their arses handed to them that day.

I will say this about Berman: he’s a dyed-in-the-wool Jets fan. Waxes poetic about watching games in Shea’s upper deck with his Dad. In fact, ESPN has plenty of professed Jets fans: Berman, Greenberg, Levy, Tirico, to name a few.

What a collapse in 2000…yeesh. Just had to win one of the last three games for a playoff spot. I still remember Hall shanking 3 field goals against Detroit. Someone pass me a deux, deux, deux…

Actually, I think he’s a Bills fan, although I’ve heard people say he’s a Jets fan before. Here’s one source that backs me up…

I’ve always thought he was a Bills fan too. If I’m not mistaken, he’s a Bills fan in the AFC and the Niners in the NFC.

He’s from Westchester (RYE). There’s no f**king way he’s a Bills fan. If he is, he’s on drugs.
