Why doesn't the NFL just sell all these shirts on E-bay and donate the money to World Vision (or to the local people themselves) so it can be spent on things they might actually need like medicines, education subsidies, better transportation etc (perhaps we could ASK them?) - rather than a cute NFL photo-op with kids in t-shirts so big they provide hardly any practical use?

Actually, the NFL has and exclusive deal with World Vision and has made it illegal to sell these items in North America. Anybody who is caught trying to sell them (on ebay or otherwise) is subject to a hefty fine. I already looked into it.

Great post...As a Steelers blogger, I posted a similar reaction to the shirts a few days ago. It's nice to see some good come of those shirts...I imagine there were a lot of Pseudo Steelers fans in 1996 in a third world country. www.5goldenrings.net

Similar to Football Francis' comment... If the NFL were to auction the shirts off and then use the money for charity, they would have been able to donate a lot more than these shirts to the WorldVision cause. It reminds me of the M*A*S*H episode where someone donated chocolate bars to the locals, but they inturn then traded the bars for rice which was more valuable. I like the gesture, but it's a little too much PR and not enough substance to me.
