Mike Devlin Working With O-Lineman

by Bassett on February 23rd, 2008 at 2:03 pm

I’ll be microblogging some today as I watch NFLN Combine coverage …

Just a note, I’m watching the Jets assistant line coach Mike Devlin working closely with the big boys, so glad to see that the Jets have an eye close to the lineman today. Not sure exactly if he will gain any more insight, but you’d have to imagine seeing guys in drills up close will be a nice bonus.

That guard from VA looked good, but I am a bit apprehensive about lineman from Virginia

Lol. Albert and Long will be very good pros.

    Couldn’t agree more, VB.

    Ultimately, so will Brick (hopefully).

In case you missed it – Zach Thomas signed with Dallas for a year.

At the combine, Jake Long posted 37 reps and ran a 5.17 (pretty good).

Carl Nicks ran a 5.19 (excellent for a 340 pounder) and lifted the bar 31 times. Small school sleeper Heath Benedict ran a solid 5.01.

John Carlson disappointed with a 4.9 forty. Who is the guy on here who’s been saying for over a year we should nab him? I may be wrong, but I think it was the ed(itor). He might come a bit cheaper now.

I am sure the wife is happy with you slobbin it up on the couch for “work”

Maybe Al Groh can pay back Jets fans for his one tortuous year here by telling Long to tank it at the combine, thereby letting him slip to the #6 slot.

I always followed the combine, but never reallys watched it before. It looked to me that there was depth at OL and skilled TEs (a new breed).

The OL that impressed me the most was the kid from Rutgers (Zuttah). His numbers were awesome (4.99-40 and 35 reps). He looked like the strongest and fastest big man. At 6’3″ 295, he seems more like a guard, but he definitely impressed.

The TE that stood out with numbers was Purdue’s Dustin Keller, but film on him showed he doesn’t even think about blocking…Cottam and Barnidge posted well and have good size, but that kid from ND-Carlson just imploded.
